The Green Line Cafe announced today that it will soon be taking over Lovers and Madmen Coffee at the corner of 40th and Ludlow. The new shop is expected to be fully operational by January 15, 2015, according to an announcement on Green Line’s website.

Green Line will be rebranding the shop, which will offer a mix of fair trade coffee and teas along with their signature foods. “…We hope to continue the vision of a welcoming neighborhood coffee shop that Lover’s and Madmen established so nicely,” the announcement reads.

Lovers and Madmen Coffee has been in operation since early 2009 and was popular with students due to its proximity to Penn’s campus.

This will be Green Line’s fourth location in West Philadelphia, adding to the shops at 43rd and Baltimore, 45th and Locust, and 38th and Lancaster.

Green Line also announced today that they are closing their only Center City location at 15th and Moravian due to new plans for the building, which recently was sold. Currently, Green Line owners, Douglas Witmer and Daniel Thut, are exploring a potential new location in Center City.

Whyyyyyy? I like Green Line but I also like variety in my coffee shops. I wish they’d just take it under management or something. I’m not sure how I feel about a West Philly filled entirely with uniform Green Lines.

  2. Nick McAvoy Says:

Aw man, Lovers and Madmen was my favorite. I hope they keep the great pour-overs.

  3. Dave Brindley Says:

Bummer. This was my favorite coffeehouse.

  4. Tutti Frutti Says:

Yes! Green Line all the way!

I like variety & this town has thrived on it . Maria Berry has the right thinking – watch out green line you may become the CVS of coffee, we blink for two seconds and up pops a new one – minus corporate greed.

  6. Jon Says:

CVS: 7,600 plus stores; Greenline: 4 stores. Yep, they’re just on the verge of reaching CVS status.

I’m so tired of how nothing can happen in West Philly without people whining about it.

Ick! Not happy about this. I loved Lovers and Madmen, and it was my “other option” to Green Line, which received too many strikes in my book in recent years. (Experiences with food/drink that went bad and was still served to me, experience with an insulting staff member.. and no lie, I made many friends that were staff there and used to feel like that place was home)

^ If you live in the Powelton area, go to Reed’s Cafe on the corner of 38th and Lancaster . Friendliest and most hospitable staff/owners you will ever meet! And they have great jazz there every 2nd Friday! That was my other “other option” from GL. A complete 180 from the staff that insulted me at GLPowelton, they really make you feel like you’ve been a neighbor of theirs all their life

  9. Pour overs are overrated. Says:

Its just a process, the outcome of coffee from a brewer is the same and can serve a busy coffee shop rather than having to wait for your trendy expensive pour overs.
