Sharing Excess, a Philadelphia non-profit dedicated to providing healthy food to local communities, is hosting a Free Food Fest this Saturday, Aug. 1 from 12 – 3 p.m. at Monumental Baptist Church (50th and Locust).
Free Food Fest will be a grab-n-go market in partnership with Wawa, Giant Heirloom, Saxbys, and other local Philly food sponsors. Food donors will set up booths in the parking lot of Monumental Baptist Church and distribute food and beverages for free. Reusable bags will be distributed at the entrance to be used as “grocery boxes” at the corner of 50th St. between Locust and Chancellor from 12 – 3 p.m..
The event will be grab-n-go style, with no more than 50 people at a time, to ensure proper social distancing throughout the space.
Strict use of PPE and safety protocols for volunteers will be in place in an effort to protect community health. Hand sanitizer will also be available at every stand. The event will have queueing guides throughout the space to maintain safe social distancing and reduce contact. Attendees will be required to wear a mask to enter.
Sharing Excess usually combats hunger in Philadelphia by delivering food surplus from local grocery stores and restaurants to community centers, hospitals, and individuals in need through its network of drivers and volunteers. Thanks to the support from the Monumental Baptist Church, they have found a safe location to offer West Philadelphians free food from local businesses.
Since the coronavirus pandemic hit Philadelphia, Sharing Excess has delivered over 150,000 fresh meals to the local community. For more information, visit: www.sharingexcess.com.
