Reader Kristen wrote us with this information:
This little cat broke into my house and has decided this is where she lives but I think that she might belong to someone else in West Philly.
Found near 49th and Springfield.
I’m treating her for fleas and making sure she is neutered so she might be a stray but before I adopt her out I wanted to put out the call.
Owners can call me at 917-280-4287 and describe the collar (no tags) she was wearing.

I am pretty sure this is the same cat that has been hanging around in my backyard for several months. I always assumed that it lived at 1006 49th street, but I could be wrong. If this is the same cat, which I’m almost entirely sure it is, he has a collar that I found in my backyard a couple days ago. I guess it broke off or something. Point is that he belongs to someone on the west side of 49th between Springfield and Chester (starting at 1006). Hope this is helpful.

It looks like the cat that was visiting with us in the 4800 block of Springfield on Sunday afternoon. I hadn’t seen it before.

(just a note: calicos are almost always female, so it’s probably a ‘she’ and will need to be spayed! Pretty girl.)

It might be a neighborhood cat named Nico. She used to belong to a neighbor, but she was left behind after they moved. She’s a very very sweet cat in need of a home–I think. Did you put a gray flea collar on her? The last time she visited our porch (Spruce ’round 50th), she had a collar on.

Ashley: I think you might be right. I didn’t put a flea collar on her but she had one on originally.
She also had a different color collar on but no tags.
She was very very hungry and had fleas so I (hopefully) doubt she is a recent lost cat.
I tried to ignore her for a week but she literally was yowling at my front door for hours. Then she broke into my house by climbing inside an open window.
I will put up a hard copy flyer in the neighborhood and check in with the neighbor you mentioned.
I plan on taking her to PAWS to get a check up and have her spayed if necessary if no owner steps forward.
Thanks.

Kristen,
I’m on the three u.city email groups/listservs and will circulate this. Can also send it to City Kitties & Project MEOW for their facebook pages. I know a kitty on that block, who looks a bit like this kitty (possibly a darker calico/tortie) who hangs out in the community garden on St. Bernard a lot. Last time I saw her her name tag read Bacala and had a phone number. I think her collar may have been red, but I don’t recall her having a flea collar. If the vet can find a scar on her from a spay I would definitely keep looking for the owner. Is her left ear ‘tipped’ (missing the tip)? I can’t tell from the photo. If so, it could mean that she was TNR’d (trapped, neutered/spayed, released).
I know someone who lives on that block and will check with them…
Please keep us posted, and consider joining the UCneighbors listserv. Feel free to email me directly at lml3@verizon.net -linda

Kristen,
I talked with the person who lives at 1006 S. 49th and it is not her kitty. She didn’t recognize it. Have you had any luck finding her home?

Not yet–I’ve been swamped with work so I still need to take her to PAWS to get tested for feline leukemia etc.
The good news is that she doesn’t have fleas anymore and is eating well–so I think she’s healthy.
Thanks for asking the neighbor. If you know anyone who is looking for a sweet little cat let me know.

Wish I did. More kitties needing homes right now than there are good folks looking for kitties to adopt. Make sure to ask PAWS if they think she’s spayed. She should definitely be fixed before being re-homed. (My friend just found a pregnant stray… and we’re trying to find someone to foster… impossible… ) Keep us posted. -linda

So no owner has come forward. I took the cat to PAWS and got her vaccinated etc. No microchip. Next Saturday she has an appointment to be spayed. Will send it along to the editor when she’s ready to be adopted.

I’m happy to announce that this little calico has been adopted! She is spayed, vaccinated, and all of that good stuff and left to live with her new owner in our neighborhood. Thanks!
