Il Rimedio, a restaurant that will offer “modern northern Italian cuisine,” will replace the once popular Rx at 45th and Spruce, where the brunch used to be worth waiting in line for on a Sunday. After about four weeks of displaying the sign “Closed tonight due to technical difficulties,” a new notice appeared on Rx restaurant’s door today (see below). As many locals suspected, the restaurant is changing hands. The Rx name, which opened under new ownership in 2010, played off the pharmacy that was previously located in the space. For those whose Italian is a little rusty, Il Rimedio translates as “the remedy.” Let’s hope so.
Stay tuned for more information on the new restaurant and its owners.

When Rx opened it was at the forefront of the local food movement. Plus, it was a charming, amiable place to eat. The ownership that took over stripped it of everything that made it special, so I’m not surprised it went under. Here’s to hoping that the new ownership will bring back that original spark.

What I want to know is, when are we gonna get an amazing brunch place? Rx was the closest thing, but I would love to see a Honey’s-esque daily breakfast and brunch place using high quality ingredients.
(I will say, the brunch at Distrito is a hidden gem, and reasonably priced.)

The food at Rx was great but amiable is not how I would describe the wait staff. I still miss Epicurian Cafe. We skipped one weekend due to the birth of our son and the place closed.

Rx was great when it opened. You walked out with a full belly, not a lot of money spent and a smile on your face. I was there shortly before it closed. The price was mega inflated, the food portions were child size, the waitstaff were obviously miserable. I’m glad it’s gone and we’re getting something else in there. It was long overdue. To me, Rx had been gone for a while anyway.

There was a grocery store there previously? I looked at the apartment above the current restaurant in 1998, but there was nothing in the ground floor space. Was it there in the early 90s?

Ruth Mellman, Betty Moloznik, Adele Hertz and Georgia Parks opened the gourmet food store A Moveable Feast at the former Powers and Reynolds Pharmacy in 1975. They featured prepared meals, box lunches and desserts for take-out, imported cheeses and coffee beans, french bread, fancy candy, and other items that were hard to find in the neighborhood at that time. Along with the Gold Standard on South 47th, they were the vanguard of locally-produced quality food in University City.

On April 1st. of 1993 Natalie Wells acquired the catering business from the original owners. We enjoyed many good years in the catering business. The front end gourmet shop was always iffy. It was a tough spot for walk ins as the students at Penn were cautioned not to go past 42nd. Hope it’s better now. Buon fortuna a il rimedio!!!
