Now you can have dessert after your tacos. Lil’ Pop Shop, a locally owned artisan popsicle shop, officially opened today at 265 S. 44th Street, between Honest Tom’s Taco Shop and Tampopo. The owner, Jeanne Chang, lives right around the corner and said that she was very excited about opening the shop in the neighborhood.

The shop hours are Tuesday-Saturday 12-9 p.m., Sunday 12-5 p.m., maybe longer or shorter depending on how traffic is, Jeanne said. Also, a mobile cart will be out starting Wednesday and hours and locations will vary.

The popsicles are made on the premises using mostly locally grown ingredients.

The current popsicle flavors include Chocolate w/ Salted Caramel Brownie, Lime Mint, Strawberry Rhubarb Lemonade, Lemon Blueberry Buttermilk and many others. All flavors sell for $3 each.

Jeanne is still working on her online presence. We’ll pass that along once it’s up and running. For now, the shop can be reached at 510-919-0784.

Such a wonderful treat! looking forward to trying other flavors 🙂

  4. Amy Says:

Operating hours should never be shorter than the posted time. It frustrates me when small businesses close early due to low business. Perhaps I came at 8:30 because you said you would be open till 9am but you’re already closed. Likelihood of me coming back is pretty slim.

TOOO MANY FAVORITE FLAVORS!!!! I can’t decide between Chocolate Salted Caramel Brownie, Cherry Lambic, or Strawberry Rhubarb Lemonade. All super delicious!

I was there today. Perfect treat with lunch. Anyone who complains about the cost is silly. These are not ‘eat a load of popsicle’ type treats. These are serious desserts, some of them. Worth the money. Cannot wait to hit Tom’s for breakfast, 44 for lunch, bottle shop for a few cold ones, then settle in with a nice peanut butter curry popsicle.

@Amy: I read that as suggesting that they might tweak their posted hours once they got a sense for traffic, not that they would leave early on a slow night. Let’s not immediately go negative on a new store in the neighborhood. Unless it’s Subway. I kid. Cue handwringing.

Stopped by for after dinner treat today. I loved my mint chocolate chip so much that halfway home I turned right around to go back and get another. I was skeptical at first but this is a BIG WIN! I hope to drop by frequently post tacos or tampopo – great addition to our neighborhood!!!

Since i don’t imagine these ship well, can’t wait to tell all my Philly friends about this new treasure.

  11. Robin W Says:

But do they continue the West Philly tradition of letting customers “dip” their popsicles in liquor?

I don’t understand the concept of this place, it is a joke. It will never make it longer then a few months, they’re freaking popsicles… $3 for one small popsicle is a joke. Honest Tom’s is a real business and is awesome, the popsicle was good but i wouldn’t go again. It is a novelty at most.

  13. Soran S. Says:

@Dub P John: You could have easily have just said this place is not your ‘cup of tea,’ but instead chose to be overly judgmental and rude. It would behoove you to show some common decency and respect. Grow up.

For the record: I absolutely enjoyed every flavor that I have been able to try. The Lil’ Pop Shop is pretty awesome!

I had the cherry lambic–very nice treat. Really strong ‘kick your ass with cherriness’ flavor to it.

Sure, $3 for a popsicle isn’t cheap. I won’t argue with that. But if paying the same when going out as you would making something at home is where it’s at, then I guess 50,000 Starbucks (with their $3 coffee) are a bad business model.

And Dub, you can have your opinion, certainly, but I don’t choose to see someone’s attempt at starting a business as a joke. Kudos to the owner; following a dream is big stuff.

  15. Kevin Says:

I tried the Mayan Chocolate last night at the Northern Liberties Night Market and glad I did. Yes, $3 is a little pricey for a popsicle but the flavors are unique and justifiable. My taste buds will be revisiting this place very soon. Good Job Lil Pop Shop!

  16. Fran Says:

These aren’t popsicles. That’s artificially flavored (rarely naturally flavored) ice. These are portable gourmet desserts with natural ingredients. They are more than worth the $3. I would have to pay more than that for the ice cream truck that travels around here. I wish I lived in the there to try a few of these flavors. Next time I’m in the area I will have to stop in.

The owner should be proud for making such an innovative business. Wish you the best.

Excellent Portlandia script, Fran. It’s almost like I’m watching the show!
