Lost 4-year-old tabby “Sydney” (49th St. between Warrington and Springfield). Update: still missing

July 3, 2012

Update (7/3/2012): Sydney is still missing.

Sydney went missing from his home on June 2nd, just after his family moved to 932 S. 49th (between Warrington and Springfield). He had been spotted a few times near his yard, but couldn’t be coaxed back to the house. He hasn’t been seen since a week ago. He was a rescue and is likely to be skittish. No collar or microchip.

This is an update from Sydney’s “Mom”:

One of my neighbors has spotted Sydney in neighboring backyards on S. 49th Street and on St. Bernard’s street across froom my yard at 932 S. 49th Street. There is a feral calico cat that has taken over my yard and is keeping Sydney from getting the food I have been leaving for him–she eats it and then lies along the fence to my yard. When she runs away she runs towards the corner of 49th and Springfield. She’s a pretty cat. Don’t know if anyone knows whether she “belongs” to anyone.

If you think you spot Sydney, even if you can’t get near him, could you please post a comment here. It helps to know if people are still spotting him in the area.

    Many thanks,
    Nancy

We saw a similar cat on our block last night (5000 Catharine). Very skinny. I can’t remember if it was a male or female though. Here is a photo taken by my neighbor on their porch.

An idea: could you humanely trap either Sydney or the Calico (long enough to get her out of the way for Sydney to be lured toward the food in your yard? He’s hanging around and he clearly wants to come home, so you’ve got that on your side). Best of luck.

RE: Emily the cat on 5000 Catharine was male. Similar markings but looked younger/smaller (big ears). Look at photo closely.

OK, that’s what I thought. Nancy thinks it’s her cat, they do look so similar.

Emily was able to catch the cat in the picture last night and, although in the picture he looked so much like Sydney, he is much younger and smaller–still growing. He was a very friendly little cat, not neutered yet. He would make someone or some family a wonderful, loving companion, but, alas, he is not my Sydney. Many thanks to Emily for removing any doubt as to whether this was my missing cat.

I am hoping Sydney is still hanging out closer to my yard. If you think you see him, look at his left ear–the tip is missing. His face is also distinctive with the brown and pink nose.

    Thanks,
    Nancy

Emily, what’s going on with not-Sydney? Are you able to find him a foster/forever home, or at least someplace that can get him neutered?

    Sydney is back home!
Sunday night Sydney came into my yard meowing for food. We set a trap for him with no luck–he wouldn’t go in and ran when we tried to get near him. Tonight when I came out on my back porch he was in my yard–much earlier than usual for him as it was only a little after 8:00. I gave him some food and coaxed him to let me pet him and do our affectionate head bumps. I was able to get ahold of him and get him inside. Hopefully, he will adjust to being an inside cat again. He’s lost some weight but doesn’t look too much the worse for wear.
Many thanks to all for their help and support.
    Peace,
    Nancy
