Found orange cat (44th & Walnut)

July 13, 2013

FoundOrangeCatA reader, April, has found an orange and white cat on her porch near 44th and Walnut. He/she seems obviously cared for but lost outside, according to April. The cat has a bell and a pet watch tag that was never registered but it seems that the cat had been adopted from PAWS.

If it is your cat please call 215 510 1798.

April, call/email PAWS and ask them to look up the number on the PetWatch tag. They may be able to trace it to the adopter. Also possible that the owner registered it with a different chip company (like HomeAgain – regardless of who produced the tag). If not, maybe it could go back into foster care through PAWS. ALSO, email/call ACCT shelter to report kitty being found. They will check to see if someone filed a ‘lost’ report. **Make sure anyone claiming to own (especially if you post an ad on craigslist) can provide solid proof of ownership. Post flyers in the area (including at the 43rd st. market, and keep an eye out for ‘lost’ flyers. -LL

Lin – I did call PAWS. They had no record of the chip #. I don’t have a printer @ home but if no one claims the cat by Tuesday, I will print some at work. Thanks.

how do we know this isn’t just an outdoor cat? data on this would be relevant.

  4. lin Says:

catolock: outside/indoor-outdoor cat is always possible, but can’t be assumed, especially if the cat has no ID and is either/both scrawny and wanting to get indoors. Yes, there are many ‘outdoor’ cats in Phila, that are owned/taken care of. But there are also many ‘lost’ cats, and also abandoned ones (even if fixed and m.chipped, sadly). Folks who care about their ‘outside’ cats need to properly ID their cats – collar and label/tag and microchip (and register!). And anyone who finds a cat they think is lost or homeless needs to do make every attempt at finding its home, before keeping or putting up for adoption. Considering the location and time of year, I figure this kitty is lucky to be off the streets until April can get more information. 🙂 -L.

It’s a girl, very friendly, and ran in my apt like she wanted to get inside. However, after looking at her closer, I realize her collar is old and deteriorated and its possible ‘maybe’ she been outside for a long time and could be pregnant???

Ill make flyers on Tuesday, but without a proper rescue from an actual owner, she can stay with me.

April, if this cat is microchipped (and adopted from PAWS or other rescue) it is VERY unlikely it could be pregnant. Rescue groups do not adopt out cats that aren’t fully vetted (fixed, vaccinated, tested for disease, and, usually, microchipped). It’s possible a ‘rescue’ cat could ‘slip through the cracks’ (and not be neutered/spayed) but unlikely. I would run the cat over to PAWS today (10am-4pm – walk-in hours, no appt. necessary) and ask them to scan for a m.chip, as well as sex the cat, and, if female, tell you if she looks/feels pregnant. You might also want to have kitty treated for fleas and worms, and maybe tested for FIV/FeLV (especially if you have another cat/s). I hope you contact ACCT shelter to give them a description of kitty, in case it is lost and owner is looking for it. There’s a simple form on their website you can fill out and email to them. I would also circulate mini ‘found’ flyers to neighbors within a block or two of your home. If I here of any lost orange&white cats I’ll let you know! -L
