Here’s a reminder that the trolley tunnel closes tonight at 10 p.m. for Trolley Tunnel Blitz, a 17-day maintenance and construction project. During this time, SEPTA Trolley Routes 10, 11, 13, 34 and 36 will operate only west of 40th Street. Passengers traveling east of 40th Street can switch to the Market-Frankford subway line at 40th and Market where all the trolleys will divert to. You can also take a bus (Routes 42, 21).
The trolley service in the tunnel is expected to resume on August 18 at 4 a.m. We’ll keep you posted if there are any changes.
Check out this video, recently put up by SEPTA, that explains the Trolley Tunnel Blitz:

SEPTA’s really come a long way in recent years with their communication efforts (and across the board). They rarely get any any credit for the improvements and always hear the complaints, but I’m an increasingly satisfied customer.

So, do we have to buy a transfer to switch at 40th to the El? Is it a free transfer. I’m new to West Philly!

Sami: All east-bound rides (and maybe westbound, I’m not sure) from 40th st. station are free during the trolley blitz. They just open up several gates that you just walk through instead of going through the turnstiles and having to put a token in.

Make sure to give yourself lots of extra time to navigate through this debacle.
SEPTA has done a poor job of outreach, providing alternate service, and explaining why they need to make life hard for anyone who dares to stay in West Philly for the summer and go to work for two years in a row.
