Series of gunpoint robberies on S. 50th street on Wednesday

September 24, 2015

A series of gunpoint robberies committed by what looks like the same two suspects took place on Wednesday night on South 50th street, according to police.

The first robbery was reported near 50th and Walton. A 24-year-old man told police that he was walking in the area around 9:50 p.m. and talking on his cell phone when he was approached by two unknown males who had white T-shirts covering their faces. One of the males pointed a black handgun at the man and said: “Where’s the money? Where’s the phone?”, according to a police report. The man handed the robbers his Samsung flip phone and his wallet containing his credit and debit cards and identification. One of the robbers also grabbed the man’s backpack, after which both suspects fled northbound on 50th street. The man was not injured. Police said that one of the suspects was wearing a white tank top.

Another robbery attempt took place just 10 minutes later, around 10 p.m., when four women who were walking home from bible studies were approached by two unknown black males as they reached the intersection of 50th and Pine streets.

One of the males pushed a black and silver pistol into one of the women’s side and demanded all of her money, according to police. When the woman told him that she didn’t have any money, the man pressed the gun against her head and demanded her and her friends’ cell phones. The woman told the gunman that they didn’t have phones and began to walk away. Then the man with the gun followed her across the street and demanded anything she had. The woman told him that she had a necklace but it was a fake, so the man left in frustration, states the report. Nothing was taken and no injuries were reported. Police say that the man with the gun had a white cloth covering his face.

similar incident took place on Monday night near 44th and Sansom, and we’re trying to confirm with police if all three incidents are related.

Jeez, so this is what I heard go down last night! Pretty sure I heard 6 gunshots in this area last night, too, and more a few nights back. Things are really heating up at 50th and Pine over the last couple of weeks.

Police said it’s very likely what people heard last night near 50th and Spruce were gunshots, but no victims or shell casings were found. Police didn’t confirm that it’s related to the robberies. The gunshots were reported around 11 p.m.

There is a camouflage backpack in the side yard of 5001 Hazel Ave. It looks like it was tossed over the fence after being riffled through. There is a glasses case lying open with glasses visible. This is a rental property.
