Philadelphia Science Festival events in West Philly (updated)

The annual Philadelphia Science Festival returns on April 22 – 30. A lot of cool and FREE events will be happening in West and Southwest Philadelphia, from Astronomy Night for families to a discussion of the brewing process and beer sampling for adults. Saturday, April 23

Astronomy Night (rescheduled from Friday, Apr. 22)

7:30 – 10:30 p.m.

Join local astronomers for some stargazing and participate in other cool projects. Several locations will be hosting this event, so pick one: Drexel University’s Dornsife Center (3509 Spring Garden St.), The African Episcopal Church of Saint Thomas (6361 Lancaster Ave), CHOP Karabots Pediatric Care Center (4865 Market St.), Schuylkill Banks (Schuylkill Banks Trail at Walnut St.), USFWS John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum (8601 Lindbergh Blvd.). 

Clark Park Science Discovery Day

10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Join West Philly-based scientists, engineers, and students for a jam-packed day of exciting, hands-on activities that everyone can enjoy (and understand)! Watch robots dance, learn about your brain, and launch a rocket…right in West Philadelphia! Where: Clark Park at 43rd and Chester.

Sunday, April 24

What’s in a Beer? From Grain to Glass at the USciences’ Brewing Lab

12 – 2 p.m.

Join brewing scientists at the University of the Sciences for a discussion and sampling of the brewing process. Evaluate raw ingredients and tour the Pilot Brewing Laboratory as an experimental beer is brewed. (Participants must be 21 or older.) Where: University of the Sciences McNeil Science and Technology Center, 45th and Woodland.

Close Up and Far Away

1 – 4 p.m.

Spend time with Penn researchers in astronomy, particle physics, and nanotechnology to discover new perspectives of our universe through the ‘eye of the lens.’ Where: Singh Center for Nanotechnology, Walnut St. between 32nd and 33rd St.

Wednesday, April 27

Neighborhood Science Afterschool at Kingsessing Library

3:30 – 5:30 p.m.

The Philadelphia Science Festival invades your neighborhood library for a celebration of science fun! Scientists, engineers, and other experts will share their knowledge at this FREE after-school program filled with exciting activities, animal encounters and hands-on, kid-approved experiments and demonstrations. Where: Kingsessing Library, 1201 S. 51st St.
