The holiday season is almost over, and the City and some local organizations are again offering opportunities to get rid of your Christmas tree in an environmentally-friendly way.

The University City District and UC Green will again be accepting Christmas trees for recycling at Clark Park. Bring your tree to the park on Saturday, Jan. 7, from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., along with a $10-$20 donation, and watch it turned into wood chip mulch (it will be used around neighborhood trees during the upcoming MLK Day of Service). Your donation will go to support UC Green programs.

Residents who will bring their trees are welcome to enjoy free roasted marshmallows and hot chocolate. Note: this year, there will be no electronics recycling at this event. Instead, you can bring your used or unwanted electronics to the nearest sanitation convenience center located at 5100 Grays Avenue, open Monday – Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. 

The City of Philadelphia is also collecting Christmas trees as part of their Holiday Recycling Program, which began today (Monday, Jan. 2).

“By recycling all of your holiday gift materials and party supplies, you can help your community and city be more sustainable,” reads information on the Streets Department website. “Every holiday season, tons and tons of valuable recycling materials are diverted from the landfill by your efforts. So, wherever you are during the holidays…remember to Get Behind Recycling!”

Through Saturday, Jan. 14, residents can drop off their trees for recycling for free at any of the following Streets Department Sanitation Convenience Centers, open Monday through Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.:

• 3901 N Delaware Ave.
• 5100 Grays Ave.
• 2601 West Glenwood Avenue
• 3033 South 63rd Street
• Domino Lane and Umbria Street
• State Road and Ashburner Street

Twenty-three free Christmas tree drop-off sites will also be open on Saturday, Jan. 7 and Jan. 14 throughout the city (from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.). The following sites will be open in West and Southwest Philadelphia:

• 66th & Haverford Ave.
• 54th & Woodbine Ave.
• 43rd & Powelton Ave.
• 72nd & Buist Ave.

Before bringing your tree for recycling make sure that it is free of all decorations and ornaments and untied.
