MLK Day of Service: events, volunteer opportunities (updated)

mlk-day-logoMartin Luther King Jr. Day is this Monday (Jan. 16). Here’s a list of events and Day of Service opportunities for local residents. Some events are being held starting this weekend and will go on until Feb. 2. More MLK Day of Service community projects can be found here.

Friday, Jan. 13

• MLK Weekend of Service at Repair the World: Philadelphia  – Jan. 13-16

Repair the World: Philadelphia will honor the legacy of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. all weekend long through offering a variety of volunteer opportunities and chances to engage with other community members. Click here to register.

Sunday, Jan. 15

Annual Symposium on Social Change Honoring Martin Luther King Jr. at the University of Pennsylvania – Jan. 15-Feb. 2, 2017

The University of Pennsylvania will honor the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. with film screenings, lectures, workshops, panel discussions and musical performances. All events are free and open to the public. Click here for more information. 

Monday, Jan. 16

• McMichael School Makeover – 9 a.m.-2 p.m. – 3543 Fairmount Ave.

Drexel University and the McMichael School family will be painting and cleaning the school for the benefit of its students. The event is sponsored by the School of Education, LeBow BRIDGE and the Lindy Center for Civic Engagement. Drexel community members can meet at 8:30 a.m. at the dragon statue or at the school at 9 a.m. Lunch will be provided. Sign up here.

• MLK Day of Service at Kingsessing Rec Center (5001 Kingsessing Ave.) – 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

Projects include painting, cleaning, and children’s craft making. Morning snack, pizza lunch, and supplies will be provided. Come dressed for painting and cleaning! Visit the event’s Facebook page for more information. Groups register here.

Adult Health Clinic at Mt. Zion Baptist Church (5015 Woodland Ave.) – 9 a.m.-12 p.m.

USciences faculty, staff, and students will conduct health screenings at the free clinic and will be available to discuss relevant health issues.

Youth Health and Science Fair at USciences Athletic Recreation Center, Multipurpose Room (600 South 43rd St.) – 9 a.m.-12 p.m.

USciences will host a free health and science fair for children offering activities including dance and yoga classes, sports clinics, hands on science experiments, games and a performance from the Kingsessing Singers Chamber Choir. At 11 a.m. there will be a showing of educational documentaries about the civil rights movement.

3rd Annual MLK Day of Raising Consciousness at West Philadelphia High School, hosted by State Rep. James Roebuck – 9:15 a.m. – 4901 Chestnut St.

This year’s theme is “Post 2016 Election: Surviving and Thriving in our Community and School.” Roebuck, Democratic chairman of the House Education Committee, and the high school are jointly sponsoring the event. Click here for more information.

Drexel Action for Early Learning – 3rd Annual MLK Family Read-Along & Book Giveaway – 10 a.m. – noon

West Phila. Action for Early Learning Initiative (AFEL) will be honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with the Third Annual Family Read-Along and Book Giveaway as part of the annual MLK Day of Service at Drexel University’s Dornsife Center for Neighborhood Partnerships (3509 Spring Garden St). Parents, caregivers and children of all ages are encouraged to participate.
