Philadelphia has a serious problem of illegally discarded tires, including in West Philly (see photo). This month, there’s a chance for local block captains and community groups to dispose of illegally dumped tires and also earn some money for their future projects by participating in the Streets Department’s 2017 Tire Round-Up program.

The event will take place on Saturday, Aug. 26 in West Philadelphia, and registered participants may drop off their illegally discarded tires at the following temporary tire drop off locations:

• 51st Street & Woodland Avenue
• 49th Street & Parkside Avenue

Both sites will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Only registered Block Captains, organized community/civic organizations, Town Watch organizations, and Partnership Recycling Groups who have registered for the Tire Round-Up Program and have received an ID number are eligible for participation in the program. Registered participants are offered a “tire bounty” of $.50 for each illegally discarded tire they collect and drop off at one of the designated sites around the city. The tire drop-off limit is 1,000 tires per group. Reimbursement is limited to up to $500 per registered participant.

Please note that tires from auto repair shops, mechanic shops, car dealers and private storage lots will not be accepted at the drop-off sites.

Over 250,000 illegally discarded tires have been collected since the program’s inception in 1995.

To participate in the program, please call the Philadelphia More Beautiful Committee (PMBC) at 215-685-3981. For more information, click here.
