Vote!: It’s election day tomorrow

November 6, 2017

The race for district attorney in Philadelphia has been one of the most-talked-about local elections in the country, thanks mostly to the candidacy of Larry Krasner. But the DA’s seat is not the only one up for grabs tomorrow.

Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. tomorrow (Tuesday, Nov. 7). Go here to find your polling place. Remember, you don’t need ID unless you are a first-time voter.

Krasner, the civil rights attorney who has promised major reforms, is running against Republican candidate Beth Grossman for the DA’s seat. That’s getting all the hubbub, of course, but here are offices to think about (click on each office for links to profiles at the non-partisan Committee of 70):

Controller

Democrat and City Hall veteran Rebecca Rhynhart is up against Republican Mike Tomlinson, a CPA from the Northeast.

City Bond question

Should the City of Philadelphia borrow $172 million to be spent for and toward capital purposes as follows: Transit; Streets and Sanitation; Municipal Buildings; Parks, Recreation and Museums; and Economic and Community Development?

Nine seats on Court of Common Pleas

Common Pleas Court judges handle most trials in the city. There are currently 90 Common Pleas judges. Nine seats are open this year. Terms are for 10 years. A couple of sources of information on judges in this race and others include phillyjudges.com and the Philadelphia Bar Association’s Judicial Evaluation Commission.

Two seats on Philadelphia Municipal Court

The Philadelphia Municipal Court is the court for lower level offenses (maximum incarceration of five years or less). Two Democrats are running for the two seats.

One seat on Pa. Supreme Court

Democrat Dwayne Woodruff, a judge in Alleghany County, is running against Republican Sallie Updyke Mundy, who currently serves on the supreme court after a June 2016 appointment by Governor Tom Wolfe.

Four seats on Pa. Superior Court

Nine candidates are running for four seats on the Pa. Superior Court, an appellate court.
