Special election Tuesday for 190th House seat

The 190th House district.

A special election will be held tomorrow, March 12, to fill the state 190th House district seat left vacant after Vanessa Lowery Brown was forced to resign. This is the only race on the ballot.

The 190th district includes some neighborhoods around Malcolm X. Park and west of 52nd Street as well as Belmont, Carroll Park, Cathedral Park, Mill Creek, Haddington, East Parkside, West Powelton, Allegheny West and Lehigh West.

Go here to find your polling place and to figure out if you live in the 190th. Polls are open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. 

Here’s a rundown on the candidates and some info to help you get out to vote. Anyone who is registered can vote in the election regardless of party affiliation.

The candidates:

Movita Johnson-Harrell (Facebook page)

Johnson-Harrell is the Democratic candidate and the frontrunner. She most recently headed the Victim’s Services office at the Philadelphia District Attorney’s office. Johnson-Harrell founded the CHARLES Foundation, an anti-violence non-profit named for her son who was murdered in 2011. Johnson-Harrell was the Democrats’ third selection for the seat after two other candidates pulled out.

Amen Brown (Facebook page)

Brown is running as an independent candidate (officially the Amen Brown Party). A graduate of Overbrook High School, Brown heads the Overbrook Community Empowerment Center.

Pamela K. Williams (website)

Williams is representing the Working Families Party. She has been pastor at the Ark of Refuge Tabernacle (Facebook) for 30 years. She has also held positions in the 60th Ward.

Michael Harvey (Facebook page)

Harvey is the Republican candidate. He is the party’s 60th Ward committee person.
