Mercy Hospital in West Philadelphia, which has provided in-patient services to residents for more than 100 years, may terminate these services by mid-August, according to reports. The officials of the hospital, located at 54th and Cedar and operated by Trinity Health, have notified city health officials about their plans, WHYY reports.
“Hospital officials assured City health officials that if these services are terminated, the process will take months and be conducted responsibly,” Philadelphia Health Commissioner Thomas Farley said in a statement.
In 2018, the hospital began renovating and expanding its emergency department, a multi-million-dollar investment. The department reopened last fall. With inpatient services terminating, the ER department will likely close as well.
The 157-bed facility, which currently employs about 900 people, will be transferring its inpatient care to other nearby campuses operated by Trinity, like Mercy Fitzerald Hospital located in Darby, Pa.
Newly-elected Councilwoman Jamie Gauthier said that she would be monitoring this situation closely:
I spoke with @6abc yesterday about Mercy Hospital. The communities of West and Southwest Philly deserve quality medical care, and I will be monitoring this situation very closely. https://t.co/J3GDRGWKHl
