COVID-19 Updates: Masks now mandatory outside if you can’t keep safe distance; Green re-opening phase may be delayed

June 29, 2020

Masks or facial coverings should now be worn in all indoor public spaces and outdoors if you can’t keep safe distance (at least six feet) from others , according to a new order by Philadelphia officials. This new rule doesn’t have to be followed if you’re around people in your household and is not mandatory for children under 8 years old. Although it is a requirement, it will not be enforced by police, according to Philadelphia Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas Farley.

Philadelphia was expected to enter the Green coronavirus re-opening phase this Friday (July 3), however, this could now be delayed due to an increase in new COVID-19 cases in the city. Some 143 new cases were reported on Friday. Philadelphia officials said on Friday that there may be a second wave of the epidemic developing in the city and that they’re keeping an eye on it before announcing their plans on the Green re-opening phase this week.

In the meantime, salons and barber shops were allowed to re-open on Friday, June 26, while Philadelphia is still in the Yellow re-opening phase.

“Case” counts mean virtually nothing, as many millions of people obviously have the virus without being seriously affected at all. Deaths are steadily declining. The actual death rate is likely about 1 in 750, or something similar.

Alex Berenson is the most credible researcher around when it comes to COVID “reporting” misinformation, and puts the lie to media distortions better than anyone else. Check out his enormously popular Twitter feed: https://twitter.com/alexberenson (Of course he uses actual data, which some may find disturbing.)

BTW the fact that AD can apparently stop people from posting at will when he disagrees with them indicates that he is a WPL staffer, something which if true WPL should at least acknowledge.

Case counts don’t mean nothing. Every infected person can infect other people. Dozens of other people. Who can get sick and die. And spread it to other people. Which prevents us from ever getting our lives back. Even people who survive can suffer serious long-term damage. I’ll listen to the scientists and medical experts, not irresponsible Trump propagandists.

“Don’t mean nothing”? Too bad you didn’t listen to your English teachers.

Anyway the point is that “being infected” don’t mean much either for the vast majority. Many scientists and medical experts will confirm this. This is a virus that, like the “regular” flu, can be miserable but is mostly lethal to maybe .2% of those infected, primarily elderly people with underlying conditions and others in poor health — which includes many seemingly healthy people in the U.S. who have poor immune systems due to the Standard American Diet (SAD). The solution? Protect the people at risk and leave the rest of us alone.

Incidentally COVID is now nearly nonexistent in Israel, Japan and other places where none of the totalitarian pseudo-scientific measures in place here have been employed. You can’t put the genie back in the bottle.

But don’t take my word for it, check the data; that’s why I provided the link to Berenson (who is not a MAGA afficionado but a liberal former NYT reporter).

    You’re welcome.

Wearing a mask is an act of love. An anti-Science bias and the power of propaganda can obscure this, for sure. Nevertheless, supporting disease abatement through one’s actions is an essential element of social responsibility.

For this reason and others, MAGA is hurting all of us.

George, your post is not aging well. The entire South is a mess because people didn’t even try to take basic measure to prevent spread. Israel is having an outbreak as well. Even if the lethality rate is 0.2%, many more have extended stays in the ICU, which are packed in Florida, Texas, and AZ. It just makes sense to wear a mask and keep your distance.

I’m puzzled by the “expert” source which george cites above. Alex Berenson seems to be a Fox News regular who has made a turn towards (right) wingnut of late. He is not a very credible researcher, as for example in his recent book against marijuana, which has been widely criticized for the poor quality of the argument presented. He should have stayed with business reporting and spy novels instead of trying to fashion himself as some kind of public health expert…

    Censorship check.

    Censorship check failed.
