The Cobbs Creek Community Association and 5th Square have launched a petition demanding a safer Cobbs Creek Parkway, one of the city’s deadliest roadways. The petition is addressed to PennDOT and the Philadelphia Streets Department and demands immediate action to make this road safe for all its users.
Last month, a 25-year-old woman was killed in a hit-and-run accident while crossing the Parkway. She was struck by two cars, one of which fled. Following her death, residents came together again to demand significant safety changes. The petition created by the Cobbs Creek Community Association states that the advocacy from the community calling for aggressive measures to calm motor vehicle traffic and provide safe pedestrian crossings has been going on for years, but has “fallen on deaf ears” and amounts to structural racism.
The petition calls for several measures to improve pedestrian safety, including more crosswalks, traffic lights and stop signs, curb extensions, pedestrian islands, and speed cushions.
For more details and to sign the petition go to the 5th Square website.
