A prayer walk and candle-light ceremony will take place this Sunday, Nov. 8, beginning at 1:30 p.m. The event, organized by local community organizations, churches, activists, and West Philly residents, will begin and end at Malcolm X Park (51st and Pine).
The goal of the West Philly Prayer Walk is to “affirm unity over our city and country.”
“With over 400 homicides this year alone in Philadelphia, including the recent murder of Walter Wallace Jr. by Philadelphia police officers, the hearts of our residents are in a constant cycle of trauma, grief and anger,” reads the announcement from one of the event organizers, writer and activist. Ayannah Kamryn.
“Coupled with tenuous emotions about newly-elected government officials, this is a pivotal turning point for the city and country. Though there is uncertainty about the final outcome of the current election, the powerful voices of those championing justice continue to ring out. We will be praying for unity and honoring the life of Walter Wallace with a candle light ceremony.”

How can anyone talk this “prayer walk” seriously with the tired and unproven rhetoric about “the recent murder of Walter Wallace Jr”? Mourn his death but stop calling it murder. Now the other 400, that’s a different story. But these victims don’t merit being named. These people don’t care about facts but about points. Wallace’s death was tragic but there is no evidence it was murder. Along with “trauma, grief and anger” there needs to be honesty. I don’t know who they will be praying to but I doubt anyone’s listening.

It’s not police brutality if the state sanctions the violence. At that point you move from calling it “police brutality” to calling it “policing”.
