CHOP to begin vaccinating teachers against COVID by late February (updated)

February 9, 2021

UPDATE (2/10/2021): More details on the City’s partnership with CHOP to provide COVID-19 vaccinations to teachers were released Tuesday. The program will kick off on Monday, Feb. 22. Vaccination clinics will take place at CHOP’s Roberts Center and at several schools in the district. Teachers and school staff will be contacted by their employer about scheduling a vaccine appointment at one of the clinics.

The City is partnering with the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) to provide COVID-19 vaccinations to teachers and school staff, according to Monday’s announcement by city officials. Vaccinations are expected to get underway by the end of this month at a number of locations.

Teachers and staff at all Philadelphia schools, including parochial and private schools, and those working in early childhood education, will be eligible for a COVID vaccine through this program. Teachers and school staff who live outside Philadelphia but work in the city can also get vaccinated under this plan.

Teachers will get notified by their employer about vaccination opportunities and how to sign up. Some school buildings around the city will have pop-up vaccine clinics for teachers and staff, according to Monday’s announcement.

Educators are included in Phase 1B of COVID vaccine eligibility in Philadelphia, which is currently underway. Monday’s announcement comes at the time of a conflict between the Philadelphia School District, who is planning to reopen schools for in-person learning on Feb. 22 and the teachers’ union, who is opposing this plan due to health concerns at poorly ventilated school buildings.
