Curio Theatre Company, whose productions have been put on hold since Spring 2020, has announced plans for the rest of the 2021-2022 season. Curio will resume live in-person theatre in their black box space at 48th and Baltimore, in the Calvary Center for Culture and Community. Work is currently underway to bring Lanie Robertson’s critically acclaimed play, Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill, starring beloved company member and Barrymore award winner Ebony Pullum. The play explores the life of legendary jazz singer Billie Holiday during one of her final performances in Philadelphia.
Sounds very exciting, but there’s even more exciting news regarding the theatre space. Starting next year, Curio will be sharing their space with Theatre in the X, creating a West Philly Theatre Collective! Theatre in the X is an innovative Black theatre troupe, known for their summer productions in West Philly’s Malcolm X Park. More information about this new theatre collective is coming soon.
Currently, Curio staff are working on creating a safe space for patrons with a new HVAC system, which was purchased thanks to donations from community members. Curio has recently launched another fundraising campaign (2021 Annual Giving Campaign) with the goal to support their artists as the theatre company emerges from the pandemic. Among their goals for 2022, Curio’s new goal is to raise their artists fees.
“Please consider giving to Curio as you have so generously in the past, and come see the results of your generosity,” reads Curio’s message to the community. “Donations are 100 percent tax deductible. We are so grateful to have patrons like you!”
During 2019-2020, right before the pandemic struck, Curio Theatre Company was celebrating their 15th season on Baltimore Avenue.
