City receives $25 million funding to improve high-crash corridors

August 15, 2022

The City of Philadelphia has recently received $25 million in federal funding for the “Great Streets PHL” project, which aims to make safety improvements to high-crash corridors in historically disadvantaged communities and areas of persistent poverty.

The funding comes from a Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability & Equity (RAISE) Grant, funded by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.

The funding will make improvements along seven high-crash corridors in the city, including the following streets in West Philadelphia:

• Westminster Avenue from 40th Street to 52nd Street
• Springfield Avenue from 51st Street to 57th Street
• North 57th Street from Upland Way to Wynnefield Avenue

Each corridor is designated as a Vision Zero traffic safety priority and is listed on the City’s High Injury Network, which identifies the most dangerous roads in Philadelphia. In 2020, over 150 people died due to traffic crashes across the entire city. Some 80 percent of traffic deaths and severe injuries occurred on just 12 percent of Philadelphia streets.
