Spring is here and the time to shop for outdoor plants, herbs and veggie starters has begun.
This year, there are not as many options to buy outdoor plants in the West Philly area, after Greensgrow closing. But many spring plant sale events have been scheduled in the area this and next month. Here are some spots where you can buy plants and also participate in workshops, tours, and other activities.
• The University City Garden Club Spring Plant Sale is taking place online through April 19, with an order pick-up event scheduled for May 6 at 517 Woodland Terrace. This is a great opportunity for University City residents to shop for plants. To shop for plants, click here. UCGC members will also be at the May Fair at Clark Park (43rd and Chester) on May 13 with more items for sale and some fun plant related activities from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. In addition, UCGC will host a Mother’s Day Pop-up Plant Sale on Sunday, May 14, 12 – 6 p.m., at 519 Woodland Terrace near 40th and Woodland. • The Bartram’s Garden Plant Sale kicks off online and in-person on Saturday, April 15. Online shoppers can pick up their orders during Welcome Center hours. Seeds are available online here. For more info on the upcoming plant sale, go here. Bartram’s Garden (54th and Lindbergh) is also hosting a Spring Fest on Saturday, April 15, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., where plants will be available for sale. • Philadelphia Orchard Project (POP) Plant Sale (postponed until May 7)

• Plant and People’s 3rd Annual B.A.P.S. (Big A$$ Plant Sale) Marketplace

The 3rd annual B.A.P.S. Marketplace is a plant lovers event, which will take place on Sunday, April 30 at the One Art Community Center. The event is free and open to the public, workshop registration is required online at www.plantandpeople.com. This year’s B.A.P.S. event will feature a huge variety of house plants, outdoor plants, seeds, herbs and vegetables, with a wide selection of planters, vegan food and local artisan vendors. In addition, the event will also include a “planty” non-profit row, where attendees can learn how to volunteer and get involved with organizations that support the community and the environment.
Adult and children (6-10) plant care and herbal workshops will be offered (for a fee) throughout the day, providing attendees with the opportunity to learn about various plant topics to be a successful plant parent. The event will also feature a soil bar, where attendees can design their own soil blend to help their plants thrive.
• 2023 Garden Day & Plant Sale with the Penn State Extension Master Gardeners of Philadelphia
Sunday, April 30, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Fairmount Park Horticultural Center (100 N. Horticultural Drive)
This year, the event will feature a large selection of affordable seedlings, native plants, and house plants for sale, including 100s of vegetables, herbs, native plants, and pollinators. All plants have been carefully cultivated by Philadelphia Master Gardeners; proceeds support their educational programs in Philadelphia. Philadelphia Master Gardeners and other local organizations will also host garden tours, demonstrations, children’s activities, and gardening workshops throughout the day. This event is free – rain or shine.
