Info you need to get ready for Tuesday’s primary

May 15, 2023

As you may have heard, Tuesday is Election Day in Pennsylvania. Locally, it’s kind of a big deal with candidates for mayor, the entire City Council, sheriff, a bunch of judges, controller, register of wills and four questions on the ballot.

It all can be a little overwhelming, so what follows is a slew of links to help you make sense of it. Remember that Pennsylvania has closed primaries, so you have to be registered in a party to vote for a candidate. But you independents can still vote for ballot questions.

Who’s running?

There is no shortage of info on candidates for mayor. One place to start to hear from the candidates themselves is the Committee of 70’s “Last Word” mayoral forum held on May 4. Billy Penn’s “Procrastinator’s Guide” to the election is also super helpful for info on all of the candidates from Mayor to City Council to Supreme Court.

The Philadelphia Inquirer has a good analysis of the four ballot questions here.

Heading to the polls or the ballot drop-off

Check your registration status here. Start here to find your polling place. Polls are open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. As long as you are in line by 8 p.m., you can vote. Mail-in ballots are due by 8 p.m. as well. Go here to find the nearest drop-off spot and to check the status of your mail-in ballot.

At the polling place

You won’t need to show ID at the poll unless it’s your first time voting in the district. Here is a list of approved IDs. The days of signing the book at the polling place seem to be over as Philadelphia is moving to electronic poll books for this year’s primary.

Experienced voters will be familiar with Philadelphia’s electronic voting machines. But if you need a refresher or are a first timer, the video here might be helpful.

Take a look at your ballot

It might also be helpful to get a sneak peak at a ballot from your district. Enter your address here, scroll down and click on “preview ballot.”
