A $50 million grant will help revitalize Bartram Village neighborhood in Southwest Philadelphia. The grant was announced last week by U.S. Senators Bob Casey and John Fetterman and U.S. Representative Mary Gay Scanlon.
The grant was awarded to the Philadelphia Housing Authority (PHA) and will be used to rehabilitate and transform affordable housing at Bartram Village, a public housing site located next to historic Bartram’s Garden along the Schuylkill River, as well as make investments to “create a neighborhood that is vibrant, well-connected to services and public transportation, and is safe and welcoming for Philadelphians.”
The revitalization plan, titled “Blossom at Bartram,” is a culmination of two years of intensive engagement and collaborative work between the City of Philadelphia, neighborhood residents, local organizations, development partners, and other community stakeholders. The funding comes from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Choice Neighborhood Implementation Grant Program.
PHA has been working with WRT, an urban planning and architecture firm, on the redevelopment plan for the neighborhood, which is part of the Bartram Choice Neighborhood Plan. The plan includes replacing distressed public housing with high-quality mixed-income housing. Community members were invited to participate in the planning process through surveys, public meetings and focus groups.
The final version of the plan can be viewed and downloaded here.
