The Walnut Street repaving project is currently underway between 33rd and 63rd Streets, which will include traffic calming measures and safety improvements for pedestrians and bicyclists. Here’s a chance for community members to weigh in on safety concerns along two other busy West Philly streets where improvements are long overdue.

Thanks to local advocacy, 47th Street between Chestnut and Paschal Avenue and 48th Street between Market and Kingsessing Ave. are being considered for safety improvements. The City’s Office of Transportation, Infrastructure, and Sustainability (OTIS) and Councilmember Jamie Gauthier are hosting two community open house meetings to discuss different safety infrastructure options for the corridor (see the infographic below).

The first meeting will take place on Monday, Sept. 18, from 6-7:30 p.m. at the 48th & Woodland Playground. The second meeting will be held at Calvary United Methodist Church (48th and Baltimore) on Wednesday, Sept. 27 from 6-7:30 p.m.

Anyone who lives in the area is encouraged to attend these meetings to learn more about the project and provide feedback.

Between 2018 and 2022, 298 crashes were reported on 48th and 47th; 56 people were seriously injured and one person was killed, according to OTIS. 46 of those crashes involved people walking and 18 involved people biking. Another crash and fatality took place at 4700 Kingsessing Ave on Sunday, Sept. 10, according to reports.
