Over 100 people have been displaced after a fire at Terrace Apartments on the 4900 block of Spruce Street that broke out on Sunday afternoon. The fire was reported in one of the apartments at around 4:30 p.m. Emergency crews arrived at the scene and evacuated over 100 residents from the building. Some residents struggled to get out of the building due to its being filled with smoke and heat, according to reports.
The fire was placed under control around 5:45 p.m. on Sunday and no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
The displaced residents were offered services at a nearby Beulah Baptist Church, located at 5001 Spruce, and Christy Recreation Center at 728 South 55th St.
“I need a place to live, I need a roof over my head. I’m sad. I don’t want to be homeless,” resident Leon Lindsay told ABC News.
Today, Councilmember Jamie Gauthier (3rd District), who represents this community and who was on the scene with first responders yesterday, issued the following statement:
“I am distressed by the fire at the Terrace Apartments yesterday. My heart breaks for the West Philadelphians who have been displaced from their homes. My office also activated our fire response protocol and has been working with PFD, OEM, and the Red Cross to ensure residents have a safe place to stay and the resources they need to navigate this destabilizing experience. To those impacted by this fire, know that you do not have to navigate this crisis alone. If you need a place to stay, information, or services, visit the City and the Red Cross’s temporary shelter at West Philly High. You may also contact the Red Cross at 215-299-4000 and my office at 215-472-2419.”
