Many people visit the beautiful historic Woodlands cemetery every day – nature lovers, runners, dog walkers and others. And some folks may not realize that The Woodlands is an active cemetery and non-profit organization. After seeing an uptick in visitors with the return of students in the recent days, the Woodlands administration has posted on social media a reminder of their rules and safety guidelines, which we are sharing on our website:
“Welcome back, students! Now is a beautiful time to visit The Woodlands and a great opportunity to remind our visitors about the rules and safety guidelines that help keep these 54 acres open daily to the public. First and foremost: please remember that The Woodlands is an active cemetery and nonprofit. Treat the site with reverence and respect.
• Do not climb, sit, or lean on headstones—they are heavy and historic.
• Dogs must be on a leash (and the person walking the dog must be holding onto the leash) at all times with no exceptions. Owners are required to pick up after their dogs.
• Biking is allowed on paved roads only. Do not bike on the dirt running path.
• Help protect our trees and flowers! Do not climb trees, swing on low branches, use hammocks or slacklines, or pick any flowers from the grounds.
• Children and youth under the age of 14 must be with an adult at all times.
• The cemetery is a ‘leave no trace space.’ Take your trash with you—a bin is available outside the front gates.
• Parking is allowed for Woodlands visitors only. Please park alongside the curb, allowing for other vehicles to pass. Avoid parking at a turn in the road, or in front of the bollards to maintain emergency vehicle access
• The Woodlands is a no-smoking site.
• The site is open daily from dawn until dusk. When you see UCD lights flashing or the sun beginning to set, make your way to the gates—don’t get locked in!”

If you’re looking for a fun way to explore The Woodlands, be on the lookout for a free guide that the staff place on the steps of the terrace on nice days (see image below).

These rules center the values of the white colonists who are gentrifying West Philly.

The Woodlands is hallowed ground and similar rules apply to Old Cathedral at 48th/Girard/Lancaster which is in a part of West Phila that is not gentrifying. They are protective of a sacred space. Widen your lens.

“ These rules center the values of the white colonists who are gentrifying West Philly.”
Are you kidding with this? Don’t desecrate a cemetery is somehow gentrificatok?
Also bud. Hate to tell you. For the area near woodland, that ship has sailed.

Second generation colonists are still colonists.

1st wave of West Philly gentrification was in the 80s/90s, culminating with the creation of UCD
2nd wave of West Philly gentrification was in the late 90s/early 2000s, in the wake of creating Penn-Alexander
3rd Wave of West Philly gentrification was post Great-Recession, with house prices skyrocketing out to 52st
We are currently in the 4th Wave of West Philly Gentrification, where house prices are spiking out to 58th St, and south of Baltimore Ave west of the train tracks
Bunch of 1st and 2nd Wave-ers now having “serious concerns about West Philly gentrification” need to check themselves and look in the mirror
