New McDonald’s to open at 40th and Walnut on Monday (updated)

September 20, 2024

The new, “fully-modernized” McDonald’s restaurant at 40th and Walnut is expected to open this month on the ground floor of a new office building.

The original 50-year-old McDonald’s building at 40th and Walnut was demolished last year to make room for the new Penn-owned six-story building. The project is part of the University of Pennsylvania’s plan to invest in the 40th Street Corridor, which began more than 20 years ago. Penn purchased the land from McDonald’s in 2022 and is leasing space to it in the new building. The new building will house Penn offices on the floors two through six.

The new restaurant is expected to have a soft opening on Monday, Sept. 23. A grand opening is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 4. The restaurant has a new team of operators, who are reportedly “excited to open for the community.”

UPDATE: The official grand opening will take place on October 4th from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

“We have a student DJ, Grimace, giveaways, treats and more! We’re excited to celebrate with the community and introduce them to their brand-new McDonald’s,” writes McDonald’s franchise Owner/Operator Alyssa Doane-Angelovich.

“This fully modernized McDonalds was designed with the latest technology that will have something to offer for every guest. With the vast amount of order points, between digital, delivery and in restaurant, we knew that we needed to optimize the kitchen to meet the demand.”

“The condensed prep line and layout will allow us to operate at the highest efficiency possible and reallocate team members to personalize every experience.”

I would lOVE to work in this office building. I’d be like “want to eat McDonald’s again for lunch?” “Um, no brainer, yes!” “Big Mac?” “Yes, right downstairs! Big Mac meal with soft drink and golden crisp french fries.” “Supersize it.” That would be soo much better than my crumby job, at lousy McDonald’s.
