“Walk Around Philadelphia” project brings people together on unique adventure

February 6, 2025

Here’s a great opportunity to set out on an adventure without leaving the city borders, to learn more about Philadelphia history and culture and connect with neighbors/fellow city residents.

Walk Around Philadelphia is a facilitated, segmented 100+ mile walk around the entire city border that takes place twice a year, in February and September, with other programs, like meet-ups, exhibitions and concerts, being held throughout the year. Participants can join in for a scheduled group walk for as long as they are able to, or can do it on their own anytime. The program founder, West Philly-based artist and community organizer JJ Tiziou, personally leads many walks.

Over 2,000 people have participated in the project since 2020.

“By creating shared experience and connection between participants of all ages and backgrounds from across the entire city and metropolitan area, Walk Around Philadelphia cultivates community, civic pride, public health and a richer understanding of the complexities of an urban environment,” writes Walk Around Philadelphia volunteer, Victoria Alfred-Levow.

This month, there are two walk segments that hug the western border of West Philly:

GROUP A: Monday, Feb. 17 at 9 a.m. from Baltimore Ave towards the Philadelphia Airport. Meet at the bench on the northwestern corner of South 61st Street and Baltimore Ave. This segment is estimated to take roughly 9-10 miles and 5-7 hours. The terrain may include wooded trails and sidewalk, with potential for off-road bushwhacking adventures.

GROUP B: Monday, Feb. 17 at 9 a.m. from Baltimore Ave towards Overbrook Station. Meet at the bench on the northwestern corner of South 61st Street and Baltimore Ave. This segment is estimated to take roughly 7 miles and 5 hours. The terrain may include a mix of sidewalk and wooded trails.

Registration fees are on a sliding scale, beginning at $15 per person, but no one is turned away for the lack of funds, with some free registrations and stipends available.
