Rebuild Philadelphia, the City’s program that invests in public spaces, will break ground on a renovation project at century-old Shepard Recreation Center located at 57th and Haverford. This is the latest in a series of renovation projects at local recreation centers, public libraries and playgrounds implemented through this program.
The groundbreaking ceremony will take place on Thursday, March 27, beginning at 1:30 p.m. Community members are welcome to attend.
The $17 million Shepard Rec transformation project will bring major renovations, including:
• A 2,000-square-foot space building addition with an accessible entrance and elevator
• Reconfiguration of interior spaces including, a gym with expanded spectator seating, multi-purpose rooms, a computer lab, exercise rooms, and a boxing amphitheater
• New finishes, lighting, mechanical systems, plumbing, windows and doors, roofing and elevator
• Exterior repairs
• Environmental abatement
• Refreshed exterior basketball courts
• Upgrades to the existing playground, including a new safety surface and equipment
• Enhanced landscaping
• A 1,000 sq. ft. outdoor performance space
• Restoration of natural grass football field and new goals
The project is in collaboration with William Penn Foundation, Philadelphia Parks & Rec, and Nicetown CDC. It is also supported by the Philadelphia Eagles.
In 2023, Rebuild Philadelphia broke ground on renovation projects at three other West/Southwest Philly recreation centers: Kingsessing, Francis J. Myers, and Johnny Sample (Cobbs Creek). As part of the Kingsessing Rec Center renovation project, which is currently underway, the Kingsessing library has also been renovated and is reopening next month. More details are coming soon.
And another West Philly library, Blanche A. Nixon Library, located in Cobbs Creek at 5800 Cobbs Creek Parkway, is reopening on Thursday, Apr. 3, after an $8.5 million transformation. Here are more details on the ribbon-cutting ceremony:
