Rebuild Philadelphia, the City’s program that invests in public spaces, will break ground on a renovation project at Shepard Recreation Center located in the Haddington neighborhood at 57th and Haverford. This is the latest in a series of renovation projects at local recreation centers, public libraries and playgrounds implemented through the program.

The groundbreaking ceremony will take place on Thursday, March 27, beginning at 1:30 p.m. Community members are welcome to attend.

The $17 million Shepard Rec transformation project will bring major renovations, including a new gym, multi-purpose rooms, computer lab, and upgrades to the playground and football field. The project is in collaboration with William Penn Foundation, Philadelphia Parks & Rec, and Nicetown CDC. It is also supported by the Philadelphia Eagles.

The 8.2-acre site offers play equipment, a sprayground and pool, sports fields, basketball courts, and a roller skating rink. The site’s large recreation building is home to a thriving youth athletics program, a public computing center, and a boxing gym. It hosts a variety of recreational activities for young people and families throughout the year.

In 2023, Rebuild Philadelphia broke ground on renovation projects at three other West/Southwest Philly recreation centers: Kingsessing, Francis J. Myers, and Johnny Sample (Cobbs Creek). As part of the Kingsessing Rec Center renovation project, which is currently underway, the Kingsessing library has also been renovated and is reopening next month. More details are coming soon.

And another West Philly library, Blanche A. Nixon Library, located in Cobbs Creek at 5800 Cobbs Creek Parkway, is reopening on Thursday, Apr. 3, after an $8.5 million transformation. Here are more details on the ribbon-cutting ceremony:
