Subway franchise zoning hearing today

December 21, 2011

The City’s Zoning Board of Adjustment will hear the case today of the Subway franchise that is proposed for Baltimore Avenue near 46th Street. The franchise is planned for the storefront at 4533 Baltimore Avenue. The Spruce Hill Community Association is still finalizing its position on the Subway franchisee’s application for a takeout permit, which is required for all restaurants. If approved the Subway is expected to have a limited seating area and the owners plan to open it early next year.

Today’s Zoning Board of Adjustments meeting is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. today at 1515 Arch St., 18th floor.

I strongly encourage people to attend the hearing regarding Subway Sandwich franchise that could open at 4533 Baltimore Ave. My main concerns are the absence of parking, possible double parking, deliveries and notorious smell associated with Subway’s. There is insufficient parking for such a fast food place. Stopped cars could block Baltimore Ave, Melville St, as well as the private drive immediately adjacent to 4533 Baltimore. I oppose having such a high-volume take-out place immediately adjacent to to the residences on S. Melville and S. 46th St.

I do not support the opening of Subway or any chain stores. Buy Local, keep it local. We have mom & pop stores that are far superior than Subway. I wish this meeting was not while most people are at work.

Irrelevant of who owns the business, yada yada…AND considering how many restaurants/businesses in that corridor have takeout permits, I’d be curious if the zoning board has legal ground for denial.
