Snowfall in West Philly: scenes from the neighborhood

December 9, 2013

Many West Philly residents, especially kids, have been enjoying the first snow this season. Some residents are not very happy though, especially car owners. Prepare for more snow tomorrow – it can start falling as early as 7 a.m. and may be “unpredictable,” according to authorities. (Photos by Annamarya Scaccia).

Yes, and what’s great is that UCD didn’t put mountains of salt on the sidewalks in “preparation” for the snow–instead of simply shoveling the snow in a timely fashion. Whatever: it’s better for them to neither salt nor shovel than for them to salt, which poisons the groundwater, kills vegetation, kills birds and wildlife and poisons their food and water supply, ruins our shoes and cars and streets, and makes our dogs’ feet bleed. Northern states, Canada, snow-heavy European nations do not use salt for these reasons plus one more: it’s not effective. It causes more problems than it solves, and it’s immensely expensive, particularly when you include repairing all the damage it does to streets, sidewalks, cars, etc.
