Many Spruce Hill residents know Richard Guffanti, a retired teacher and community organizer who lives near 45th and Spruce. Richard is always ready to help his neighbors with various problems and is also keeping an eye on his block.
This thank you note and photo came from our reader Veronica:
“This is Rich Guffanti, shoveling the pedestrian walkway on 45th and Spruce – an area he isn’t even responsible for as a homeowner! He was just doing it so that people can get through safely. I was catching the bus on 45th and Spruce and saw him being a great neighbor. Thank you, Rich.”

Hopefully Algernong Allen will see this and take a lesson. Just because your building burned down and you left the lot vacant for a year does not mean that you are not responsible for the snow/ice on the sidewalk.
The sidewalk in front of Elena’s old location has been covered with ice since the storm last weekend. I would think someone running for local office would be more attuned to community/legal responsibilities like this. On the other hand, this is Philly!

Thanks Steve on 45 for alerting me to this. First, thanks to people like Rich Guffanti for being plain good folk and continuing to make this community the great place it is to live. Steve on 45th, you also make this community great, by speaking up and holding people (even me) accountable for our community. The sidewalk has been taken care of. All the best. AA

Rich is also a very active board member of Spruce Hill Community Association. We’re lucky to have him!! Thanks, Rich!

Algernong, I hope you didn’t pay someone for that piddling barely foot-wide shovel path this morning. It looks ridiculous in direct comparison to the far more neighborly wide path done by Cedar Park Cafe.

Perhaps all the people ganging up on Algernon could gather themselves together and clear the sidewalk for him. Afterall, isn’t that what community is about? Stop complaining and take action.
