A string of robberies with sawed-off gun in Cedar Park area over the weekend

October 20, 2014

crimePolice have issued a crime alert in the Cedar Park area following a string of robberies and attempted robberies over the weekend. In all three cases reported below, a sawed off shotgun or imitation of a gun was used.

The first incident happened on the 800 block of S. 48th Street, around 11:20 p.m. on Saturday, when a 28-year-old man was approached on the street by a young male, who pointed a sawed off shotgun at the victim and demanded money. The victim told police that he did not believe the gun was real and started screaming, according to a police report. The attacker didn’t take anything and fled on foot toward Baltimore Avenue.

The other two incidents took place on Sunday. A 26-year-old man was robbed and pistol-whipped near 47th and Hazel around 8:15 p.m. by two males, one of whom pressed a sawed off firearm into the victim’s chest, according to police. The males took the victim’s iPhone and wallet. The man was also hit in the head with the firearm after he said he didn’t have anything else and sustained a cut to his ear.

The third robbery occurred near 49th and Cedar at around 10:30 p.m. when a 33-year-old man was robbed while parking his car, according to police. An unknown young male walked up to the driver’s side window and tapped on it with a brown and black gun with wooden grips with the barrel sawed off, according to the report. He said something the driver couldn’t hear, but believing he was being robbed he drove away and nothing was taken, the report says.

Police also advised residents not to fight back during a robbery attempt even if they think a firearm is fake.

There’s not a lot of information available on the suspects. They are described as young black males (18-30 years old), 5’7-6’0, wearing dark-colored hoodies.

Hi, I was sitting out on my porch on Sunday night when I witnessed the third incident. The driver was parking in front of our house when a young black male, wearing a light gray hoodie, sweatpants and white sneakers walked up to the car from 49th, south of Cedar. We couldn’t tell what was in his hands, but it was about the size of a sawed off shotgun, so that would make sense. He loudly instructed the driver to “get out of the car” several times before the driver drove off. The guy then walked away down Cedar towards 48th after apologizing to us, which I guess after trying to rob someone with a shotgun made the whole thing better.

Anyway, I called the 18th district and sent the second precinct an email, but haven’t heard back, so yeah. Well stay safe out there!

The police should have been there…. Yeah right. Take responsibility for your own safety.
