Fringe Festival kicks off Sept 9: Check out West Philly events; support West Philly artists

FringeArtsphotoThe annual celebration of Philly arts and artists, The Fringe Festival, will be held from Sept. 9 through Sept. 24. This year, the festival has expanded its reach and is presenting an array of outstanding contemporary theater, music, dance and other performances at city-wide locations, including many events in West Philadelphia.

Here’s information on some of the performances to be held in West Philly. We also included shows by West Philly’s all-female aerial dance company, Tangle (for more festival events and tickets, visit: fringearts.com).

Shakespeare @ the Bar: The Taming of the Shrew

Sept 11, 7:30 p.m. – City Tap House (3925 Walnut St)

Fire up your Tinder profile (seriously) and get ready for Shakespeare @ the Bar, a no‐holds‐barred experience of Shakespeare like no other in Philadelphia! This lightly rehearsed production of the Bard’s most irreverent romantic comedy exposes one man’s lusty, raucous scheme to “take one for the team” and get filthy rich in the process. Vibrato: 3 Solo Dances

Sept 11 & 12, 8 p.m. – CEC Meeting House Theatre (3500 Lancaster Ave)

Group Motion Multi Media Dance Theater presents VIBRATO: 3 Solo Dances created and performed by national and international dance artists Silvana Cardell, Chloe Felesina and Laina Fischbeck. $25 ($30 at the door). More info and tickets are here.

First Person Arts StorySlam: Too Far

Sept 12, 8:30 p.m. – World Cafe Live (3025 Walnut St)

Got five minutes? Come and lend an ear, or share an experience! Audience storytellers take to the stage with real life stories on the theme “Too Far.” Winners get $100 prize and a spot in the season finale Grand Slam lineup at the 15th Anniversary First Person Arts Festival (November 2016). Surface Tension

Sept 14-17 – Neighborhood House in Old City (20 N. American St)

Tangle, an all-female aerial dance company, presents its new Fringe Festival show Surface Tensiona dynamic circus-theater exploration of life’s hidden currents. Tangle is based in West Philly, and is largely comprised of performers who live and work in West Philly. Click here for more information and tickets ($10-20).

Once More, With Feeling

Sept 16 & 17, 8 p.m.; Sept 18, 3 p.m. – CEC Meeting House Theatre (3500 Lancaster Ave)

Presented by Adrianna Poindexter. Once More, With Feeling is an expressive and passionate dance suite that captures snapshots of life. $15. More info and tickets are here.

At and About the Edge of

Sept 14 & 15, 8 p.m.; Sept 16, 6 & 8 p.m. – Indigo Bleu Design & Culture Center (3870-72 Lancaster Ave)

A positively prepositional performance piece of Interdisciplinary Inclines by Fran Markey with Mauri Walton and Michael McDermott. At and About the Edge of invites you to wax with curious delight and wonder on a probe of the experience of approaching the presence and absence of anything commonly known as Nothing. $20. Making Dance

Sept 17, 3 & 6 p.m. – URBN Center (3401 Filbert St)

Dancefusion, Philadelphia’s dynamic modern dance repertory company will present Making Dance, featuring three creative new works by guest choreographers, Stephen Welsh, Masad Qawishabazz and company member Kalila Kingsford Smith. $25 general/$20 student. More info and tickets are here.

The 7-Person Chair Pyramid High Wire Act

Sept 9, 14, 15 & 16, 7 p.m.; Sept 10 & 17, 6 p.m. – Panorama (5213 Grays Ave)

Charles Darwin goes out in search of the yeti. A bat tries to woo the electromagnetic spectrum. Smokey Robinson plays on the radio. Presented by Der Vorfuhreffekt Theatre. $12. More info and tickets.

Albert Camus’ The Just

Sept 9-24 – Panorama (5213 Grays Ave)

Behind the curtained window of a Moscow apartment, four terrorists plot to assassinate a tyrant. But can justice grow from the ashes of murder? Can hate be a weapon in the service of love? Presented by Übungsflugzeug. $23. More info and tickets are available here.
