Family robbed and carjacked on 4600 block of Larchwood Wednesday afternoon (updated)

February 15, 2018

A family was robbed and carjacked at gunpoint on the 4600 block of Larchwood Avenue on Wednesday at about 1 p.m., according to the University City District.

Two young adult males approached a family that was exiting their vehicle on the block and asked for money. The family refused to give them any money, and one of the males produced a gun and demanded valuables. The two young men also stole the family’s vehicle.

Two males with the same description attempted to carjack another vehicle a block away about 10 minutes earlier, according to UCD. The driver in that incident refused to exit his car, and the two men fled.

“Although we have reason to believe this was an isolated incident, both UCD Public Safety Ambassadors and Philadelphia Police will have an increased presence in the area,” a UCD statement read.

No detailed description of the two males was available.

There were no injuries reported. No arrests have been made as of Friday morning, according to police.

  1. Chris at UCD Says:

One correction: the other attempted carjacking happened 10 minutes before this reported incident, not ten minutes after. The suspects were unsuccessful on their first attempt.

  2. West Says:

“Two males with same description” but “no detailed description”? Just two males? Black, White, Asian, Hispanic? Surely this detail is known.

  3. 46er Says:

They tried to put down descriptions here before, and some readers were not too happy with racial details.

  4. WP Says:

Need to provide description of males

Thanks for all your comments. When police provide detailed descriptions of suspects we always post them. Please check our crime section.

  8. WPL Says:

We also asked about surveillance video. Here’s a response from a PPD spokesperson: “When we release video, we upload it to our website and our Youtube page… Please note that just because video may exist does not mean that detectives will choose to release it.”

  9. West Says:

@WPL Thank you for the precision. Still, makes one wonder why the PPD won’t/hasn’t yet provided more details.

  10. Hermes Says:

Thank you for the clarification indeed. And sorry, I used too strong a wording.

  11. Brian Villa Says:

If police don’t release video/description, they are probably looking for persons of interest. Another item is that video can give away its location and cause witness intimidation issues.
