Trolley Portal Gardens, the development project transforming the 40th Street Trolley Portal into a more welcoming public space, has been completed, and this Thursday, Sept. 27, the public are invited to a grand opening. The event will be held from 5 – 7 p.m. and will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony with city and state representatives, including Mayor Jim Kenney and Senator Anthony Williams, as well as speakers from University City District, SEPTA and business owners.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony will begin at 5:15 p.m. and will be followed by an open house and refreshments. The event is free and open to the public (you can RSVP here).
The construction of Trolley Portal Gardens, which also includes a new two-story restaurant, Trolley Car Station, began last summer after years of fundraising and planning initiated by UCD. This project is so many months overdue that my enthusiasm has waned. If they had opened the restaurant and gardens in the spring as planned, it would’ve been in full swing by now.

I know where you’re coming from, but as a former resident of Woodland Terr. I’m glad to see the new landscaping. As for the restaurant…meh. I’m in the area almost daily and can’t imagine stopping in. The entire location is a point where people are desperately trying to get to work or get home. I wish them all the best, but I have a hard time wrapping my head around eating next to that stinky tunnel.
