Beeswax is versatile material that has been used by humans for millennia. Today, we commonly associate beeswax with products like candles or lip balm. Although candles have been made from beeswax throughout history, we know that ancient Egyptians made rushlights, or torches, by soaking reeds in melted animal fat. They used beeswax to make amulets, small figurines, sealants, and even incorporated it into the process of mummification.

Join Egyptologist Jennifer Wegner, Ph.D., to learn more about the wide variety of uses for beeswax and torches in ancient Egyptian life.

You also have the option of purchasing a Handmade History Kit: Poured Beeswax Candle to get free access to this program on top of some DIY fun! Available for purchase at our online Museum Shop starting early December.
