The COVID-19 mass vaccination clinic, previously run by Philly Fighting COVID (PFC), reopened in Philadelphia’s Convention Center earlier this week. The City’s Department of Public Health is now running the clinic. The clinic’s goal is to administer second vaccine doses to people, mostly health care workers, who received their first doses last month at the PFC-run clinic.
Starting the week of February 22nd, the city is planning to open more mass COVID vaccination clinics, according to Philadelphia Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas Farley. There will be three first-dose clinics and three second-dose clinics per week. The city’s health department workers will be reaching out to people who had pre-registered on the COVID-19 Vaccine Interest website about scheduling an appointment at one of the clinics. Also, people without internet access can now pre-register via the city’s COVID Call Center at (215) 685-5488.
Since the city has entered Phase 1B of COVID vaccine eligibility, it has been prioritizing people over the age of 75, those with certain chronic medical conditions, such as cancer, kidney disease, diabetes or organ transplant patients; first responders, people living and working in congregate settings, and service providers working with vulnerable people. Transit workers are expected to be offered vaccinations next, according to Farley. It may take weeks to reach other eligible groups. As was reported earlier this week, the city’s pharmacies – Rite Aid, Shoprite and Walgreens – will begin vaccinating against COVID people who are 75 or older starting next week. You can pre-register online at the city-run website or call (215) 685-5488. Area hospitals and federally-qualified health centers have also begun offering COVID vaccinations to their senior patients and those with high-risk medical conditions.
Also, a reminder that the Black Doctors COVID-19 Consortium has been vaccinating people in the city’s Black communities. People can pre-register directly on the consortium’s website.

Do the math: The odds of negative effects like illness and death for the unvaccinated who don’t use masks or practice distancing vs. the odds of side effects for those who take the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines. Then realize that this can never be a purely self-centered issue: We really ARE all in this together.

We have belittled the public health measures and the things that we could have done to get this virus under control. And because that wasn’t done, largely by this last administration, the Trump administration, what we have now is we have, as you’ve already noted, the most cases in the world, the most deaths in the world…
