Power outages knock out numerous traffic lights in West Philly

The Penn Division of Public Safety is reporting that due to power outages in West Philadelphia traffic lights are out Monday morning in the following locations:

  • 34th and Market
  • 38th and Walnut
  • 39th and Walnut
  • 40th and Walnut
  • 34th and Chestnut
  • 38th and Chestnut

Police are on location directing traffic. Commuters should expect delays.

Road closures, city service schedule changes this Thursday due to the Eagles parade

The Eagles Super Bowl Parade will be held this Thursday (Feb. 8). Please note the following road closures in the University City area and city service changes due to the parade.

The following streets will be closed to vehicular traffic on Thursday, Feb. 8, from 12 p.m. until approximately 9 p.m.:

• I-76 on and off ramps to 30th Street and South Street
• Streets surrounding 30th Street Station
• Spring Garden Street Bridge
• JFK Boulevard Bridge

Residential trash and recycling collection will be suspended on Thursday, but will resume on Friday, delayed by one day for the rest of the week.  Continue Reading

SEPTA to offer free rides on Thursday, Feb. 8 due to the Eagles parade

SEPTA will be offering free rides on the Broad Street and Market-Frankford Lines before and during the Super Bowl victory parade on Thursday, Feb. 8. SEPTA will also make significant service adjustments, including limited stops on Regional Rail for service to-and-from Center City.

The parade will begin at 11 a.m. at Broad Street and Pattison Avenue, continue north on Broad to City Hall, and then onto the Benjamin Franklin Parkway toward the Philadelphia Museum of Art. To better control crowds with available personnel and to allow for more efficient service, SEPTA will consolidate stops on rail lines. Regional Rail will operate inbound-only in the morning and outbound-only after the parade.  Continue Reading

Public schools to close Thursday for the Eagles parade

February 5, 2018

The city will hold the Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles parade on Thursday, Feb. 8. Due to the parade, Philadelphia public schools and administrative offices will be closed, according to a Monday afternoon announcement by the School District.

“The excitement of the Eagles first Super Bowl victory is a once in a lifetime event. For this reason we have decided to give our students, teachers and their families the chance to witness history,” reads the official statement from Dr. William R. Hite, Superintendent.

The parade will begin at 11 a.m. at Broad Street and Pattison Avenue. We’ll post more information when it becomes available.

Early dismissal for public schools due to freezing rain in forecast for Monday afternoon

January 8, 2018

All Philadelphia public schools will dismiss at 1 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 8, due to freezing rain and sleet in the forecast for late Monday afternoon. All after-school activities including all athletic programs and professional development sessions scheduled for Monday are canceled as well. In addition, all District early childhood centers will also be closed early.

West Philadelphia Skills Initiative recruiting for Landscape Crew Members

University City District’s award-winning job training program, The West Philadelphia Skills Initiative, is recruiting a new cohort of trainees for a program that includes a guaranteed job interview with a local landscaping company. From Jan. 3rd through the 26th, the program will be recruiting unemployed West Philadelphia residents for a training program with BrightView Landscapes LLC.

BrightView is a commercial landscaping company that holds over 80 percent of the landscaping contracts in University City.  Continue Reading
