Several art statues representing what appears to be the 1950’s lifestyle have been spotted on Market Street near 48th. The statues were placed on an empty lot near construction business T Depaul & Sons, but it doesn’t appear that they belong to it. West Philly artists are invited to The Rotunda (40th and Walnut) for a couple of events this month – a planning meeting for a community arts project, and a tax workshop.
The community arts project, “When I am the Princess,” will take place on Saturday, March 9 when artists will have the opportunity to read, sing, perform, dance, show and/or exhibit at The Rotunda. The first planning meeting for the project will be this Saturday, Jan. 26, 2:00-3:30 p.m. (the second meeting is on Sunday, Feb. 24, 2:00-3:30 p.m.). Continue Reading

Neighborhood Time Exchange, the West Philadelphia artist residency program located in West Powelton, is seeking artists for their 2019 residencies. Two residencies will be available next year: February-June 2019 and July-November 2019.
Artists in residency will get free studio space at 4017 Lancaster Avenue, a monthly stipend and basic tools and supplies. In return, Time Exchange will ask artists to give back to the community through working on civic projects suggested by residents and community-based organizations. Artists are also expected to organize open houses, exhibitions, and other events that will help establish a connection with the community. Continue Reading

Curio Theatre Company is opening its 14th season this week with an American classic re-imagined. The West Philly-based theatre company will stage Arthur Miller’s “All My Sons” beginning Wednesday, Oct. 10.
In this 1947 play, Miller portrays a couple, Joe and Kate Keller, living a comfortable suburban life with their son Chris. Their other son, Larry, went missing in action a few years earlier and Chris becomes involved with Larry’s former fiancée, Kate, who must finally accepts that Larry is gone forever, and face the horrible truth about what caused his death. The Fall edition of Go West! Craft Fest, featuring wares by 100 local makers, live entertainment and food, will be held this Saturday, Sept. 29, at The Woodlands (40th and Woodland). You can shop all day (11:00 a.m. to 5 p.m.) for unique and creative stuff, including artisan jewelry, ceramics, home wares, clothing, cards, candles, soaps, scents, sweets, toys, tinctures, treasures, and works of art. Here’s an opportunity for local artists to help create public art in West Philadelphia’s Mantua neighborhood. Mt. Vernon Manor CDC and the Friends of the Mantua Greenway are seeking a qualified team of artists to work on public art installations along the future Mantua Greenway site, a new bike and walking trail. The project includes the design, creation, and installation of three community-supported, semi-permanent elements that “will inspire curiosity and foster engagement with the Mantua Greenway project during its construction phases,” according to the project description.
