This one was about as easy as it gets for police. A resident on the 4300 block of Baltimore Avenue reported a burglary after she was awoken just before 2 a.m. on Thursday by noises and a first floor security alarm.
The resident found a window open, several thousand dollars worth items missing from the first floor of the house and cinder blocks stacked outside below the window. Police arrived to find many of the items in an alley near the home. As the scene investigation continued, police noticed someone peering around the corner of a building on 44th Street. When the man reached for his ID after being stopped by police, an i-Phone that was later identified as the resident’s fell out of his pocket.
The man, 20-year-old Lakim McDonald of the 5600 block of Washington Ave., faces burglary and related charges.
Joe Murray of Southwest Detectives tweeted about the arrest earlier today:

The number of burglaries and robberies in the University City area went down over the last few months, but this report is a reminder to residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
A Spruce Hill resident reported a break-in attempt at a small building with four apartments on the 4500 block of Spruce St. The incident happened early in the morning on Wednesday, Oct. 1, between midnight and 3 a.m. and was also reported to the police. The person who wrote us about the incident is one of the tenants in the building.
“…Someone attempted to break into a building on this block (Spruce St. between 45th & 46th) between the hours of 12-3 a.m. They did serious damage to a security door but did not get inside. To our knowledge, it was not anyone known to the tenants,” she wrote in an email.
The building tenants were a little shaken up by what had happened, according to the email. They want others to know about the incident and are also asking neighbors to contact police if they saw or heard anything suspicious that night.
“Neighbors can help keep neighbors safe,” the building tenant writes. “Please be alert, and don’t hesitate to dial 911 to report suspicious activity.”

There was a gunpoint robbery at the Garden Court Eatery (4725 Pine St) over the weekend. Police say two men robbed the store on Saturday, Sept 27, around 9:30 p.m. One man, armed with a black handgun and with his face covered with black garb, entered the store, jumped over the counter, pointed the gun at a female employee and told her to open the register. When she opened the register, the man took cash and fled.
The suspect ran across the street toward an alleyway. He approached the store from the same direction, police say.
Another man, wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt with the hood covering his face, stood at the entrance until the first man finished the robbery and then fled in the same direction, according to police.
The armed suspect had a black backpack with “Sugar House Casino” written on it and was wearing white gloves, according to police. Police say they have surveillance video of the robbery, which they should release soon (we’ll keep you updated).
This is the third gunpoint robbery of the Garden Court Eatery this year. The previous two robberies took place in January and February.

Police are investigating the death of a 21-year-old female Penn student whose body was found in a three-story student boarding house near 40th and Sansom.
Police say roommates discovered the woman on Sunday night, at around 11:30 p.m., in her bedroom and attempted CPR. When police arrived they observed a blood spatter on the wall next to the woman, according to a police report.
An empty pill bottle was found on a nearby table for 60 pills prescribed to the woman about two weeks ago for treatment of depression, according to the report. There were also two notes on her desk, one addressed to her family and one to her mental health doctor at Penn. The letters appeared to be suicide notes, according to police. The woman’s roommates told police that they heard her screaming and heard banging sounds coming from her room earlier Sunday.
Police said they are treating the death as suspicious and the investigation is continuing.

[Editor’s Note: Just as we were getting ready to publish this, a new twist emerged. Maria wrote that she was contacted last night by another person by telephone demanding that she pay $1,000 for the return of her car at an agreed-upon meeting place. She contacted police soon afterwards. They took a report. Maria’s insurance does not cover theft.]
A reader, Maria, is stuck in kind of missing car purgatory. Maria (she asked that we not use her last name) is a single mom and music teacher at a local school who recently moved to West Philly. Her 11-year-old daughter started school this fall, so last Tuesday, the first week of school, was filled with the normal excitement and everything flowed as it should, Maria wrote in an email. After picking up her daughter after school Maria parked her charcoal gray 2012 Toyota Corolla on the corner of 44th and Osage, right by her apartment, a “great parking spot,” Maria notes.
“I had parked at 3:30 p.m. last Tues. afternoon. My car was missing Wednesday a.m. at 7:30 a.m. No signs were posted, however, PGW had placed barricades on the corner of 44th and Osage where I was parked,” she wrote. Continue Reading

Police are still looking for the man who stole a bag filled with gold jewelry from a car parked near 52nd and Market Streets on September 2, at about 12:40 p.m. It was reported earlier this month that there was surveillance video of the incident, but the video wasn’t released until yesterday.
Southwest Detective Division is seeking public help in identifying and locating the person seen in the video who, police say, smashed the front passenger side window with a hammer, took a blue duffel bag with various gold jewelry items, worth approximately $66,000 (previously, it was reported that the value of the stolen jewelry was over $100,000), and fled on a bicycle.
The 74-year-old owner of the bag parked his car and went to the nearby Cash For Gold store to conduct some business, according to police. He was at the store for about 5 minutes, during which the theft took place.
If you have any information about the suspect, please contact Southwest Detective Division at 215-686-3183/3184.
