Two men in custody after brazen apartment robbery attempt (UPDATE: Charges filed, another robbery added)

October 28, 2011

crimeUPDATE: Police say that the two men connected with the incident below have been charged with robbery, aggravated assault and weapons charges. They have also been charged in connection with another robbery on Oct. 25 in the 5600 Springfield Ave. In that case, police say the 18-year-old, whom they identified as Tory Winchester of the 5600 block of Springfield Ave., and three other men, including the unidentified 17-year-old below, broke into an apartment at about 12:30 a.m. Three males in their 20s were in the apartment and awoke to find the four men each pointing handguns at them. The four suspects ordered the men to walk down the stairs to the apartment’s living room and asked about narcotics and money, police said. One victim was punched and another was pistol whipped, police said. The four suspects escaped with a cell phone and a transpass.

Two men are in police custody after their brazen plot to rob three residents in an apartment at 4725 Chester Ave. last night fell apart.

Police say a 17-year-old man armed with a handgun burst into the apartment at about 10:30 p.m. and demanded that the three people inside – two women and a man – hand over cash and other belongings. The man then called two accomplices on a mobile phone and told them he would let them into the building. Police said he then marched the three victims at gunpoint down the building’s stairs to the main entrance to meet two accomplices. When they arrived at the door the victims fled outside and found police.

The 17-year-old and an 18-year-old accomplice were apprehended. A third suspect is still at large. Police were searching the area last night in patrol cars and from a helicopter.

There were no injuries. The male victim, who resided in the apartment, is 19. The females are 24 and 29 years of age.

The charges against the two men in custody will be forthcoming, police said.

Neighbor reports theft near 45th and Locust

September 23, 2011

Here’s something to watch out for. Neighbor Ayse, who lives on 45th Street between Spruce and Locust, is reporting some theft in her area:

“There was some minor theft that happened here over the past twoish days, and I just wanted to give people a heads up that there might be someone checking for unlocked doors and pilfering packages. I had a FedEx package stolen that was in the foyer between the front door and the apartment door (the front door was unlocked, but closed). My roommate also had a package delivered that was ripped open, but the contents were still there. The downstairs tenants had a cell phone and digital camera stolen from inside the apartment – small, potentially not immediately noticed. We reported the stolen package and stolen tech items to the police, but it’s unlikely they’ll find them since they’re disposable/ so small. But we wanted to let the police know in case it keeps happening. And we realize that it’s not the greatest idea leaving our front door open, but that aside, we wanted to give people a heads up to lock their doors and pay attention to packages.”

Police do not confirm report that 13-year-old girl apprehended in rape, robbery case

September 16, 2011

NBC Philadelphia is reporting that police have apprehended a 13-year-old girl in connection with the rape and robbery near 48th and Springfield on Tuesday night. Captain John Darby of the police Special Victims Unit would not confirm the report.

“There has been no apprehension,” he said.

Darby said investigators are still seeking the younger accomplice.

The victim’s boyfriend, who was robbed and witnessed the sexual assault at gunpoint by the girl’s 18-year-old accomplice, told a reporter that the 13-year-old, who was originally thought to be male, tried to prevent the sexual assault before fleeing. Police announced the arrest of the 18-year-old yesterday morning.

Darby would not confirm that the teen was a female.

NBC reports that the girl was taken into custody Thursday and, as of early this morning, had not been charged.
