New neighborhood artists group meets every Saturday in Clark Park

November 12, 2020

There’s a new group of local West Philly artists that meets every Saturday at 10 a.m. by the Turtle in Clark Park (43rd and Baltimore). The group, Clark Park Artists, was recently formed with a goal to support other artists, get better at drawing, and meet other likeminded artists.

More artists are welcome to join the group. Interested? Please bring yourself and your drawing supplies to the next meeting on November 14th to practice drawing with other artists. Typically, the meeting starts with a drawing exercise, then moves onto a longer drawing session. At the end, everyone will share what they have done.

For Winter 2020, Clark Park Artists’ meetings will be on Zoom.

West Philly Prayer Walk planned for this Sunday

November 6, 2020

A prayer walk and candle-light ceremony will take place this Sunday, Nov. 8, beginning at 1:30 p.m. The event, organized by local community organizations, churches, activists, and West Philly residents, will begin and end at Malcolm X Park (51st and Pine).

The goal of the West Philly Prayer Walk is to “affirm unity over our city and country.”

“With over 400 homicides this year alone in Philadelphia, including the recent murder of Walter Wallace Jr. by Philadelphia police officers, the hearts of our residents are in a constant cycle of trauma, grief and anger,” reads the announcement from one of the event organizers, writer and activist. Ayannah KamrynContinue Reading

As was expected the Spruce Hill Community Association (SHCA) has cancelled its annual Halloween Tot Parade, a tradition that goes back 23 years. The post-parade block party at the “Little Osage” where neighbors offer sweets and treats to children, has also been cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions.

However, folks will still be able to celebrate in a socially distanced manner, according to SHCA Board President Evan Johnstone. Some alternative plans are currently in the works to help keep the Halloween spirit alive, including  house decorating, a kid-friendly, Halloween themed activity, and trick-or-treating options while maintaining a safe distance. We’ll let you know when plans are finalized and more details are available.  Continue Reading

Virtual West Craft Fest returns this Saturday

September 24, 2020

The West Craft Fest held in spring and fall at The Woodlands will again take place virtually due to the ongoing pandemic. This Saturday, Sept. 26, work by West Craft Fest’s past vendors will be featured on its Instagram page (anyone who participated in the craft fest’s 2019 events is welcome to tag their IG posts with #virtualwestcraftfest).

Shoppers are invited to follow the Fest Instagram page and the #virtualwestcraftfest hashtag to find out what vendors have been creating, including some special one-day-only discounts. This is a great opportunity to shop for holiday gifts early and support local makers during these difficult times.

The December Fest, which was held at The Rotunda before the pandemic, will most likely be online-only also. The organizers hope that they will be able to return to the Woodlands in April 2021.
