Construction work on the Chestnut Street Bridge and Schuylkill Expressway/I-76 viaducts will resume on Monday, May 4, according to an announcement by PennDOT. Motorists should watch out for reduced lanes and closed shoulders and ramps in the work area. Expect significant backups and delays near the work area.

PennDOT is resuming the project in accordance with Governor Tom Wolf’s plan for a phased-in reopening of public and private construction. The project was paused on March 17 in response to mitigation efforts. Work on the project will be in compliance with Centers for Disease Control and state Department of Health guidance as well as a project-specific COVID-19 safety plan, which includes protocols for social distancing, use of face coverings, personal and job-site cleaning protocols, and other safety measures.  Continue Reading

The city’s ban of single-use plastic bags, which was expected to go into effect on July 2nd, has been postponed until January 2021. The July start date for the new regulation was reconsidered by the City because of the disruption of work of many businesses amid the COVID-19 pandemic. A July start date was not realistic in light of the pandemic, Mayor Jim Kenney said last week.

The ban is now expected to go into effect on January 1, 2021, and enforcement is expected to begin next April.

The ban will affect businesses like supermarkets, convenience stores, gas stations, take-out restaurants, farmer’s markets and even food trucks. They will have to either switch to paper bags or offer their customers an option to buy a reusable bag.

Pennsylvania liquor stores have been closed since March 18th due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But starting this Monday (April 27), the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board has expanded the list of Fine Wine & Good Spirits stores that accept orders for curbside pickup. Now three West Philly stores – 43rd and Chestnut, 49th and Baltimore and at 51st and Lancaster – are included in the list.  Continue Reading

The local non-profit Neighborhood Bike Works has launched a great new program with a goal to help essential workers in the neighborhood.

Many people rely on public transportation to get to and from work, but social distancing may be very difficult on SEPTA, especially after its service was reduced. NBW’s new program offers free bikes, refurbished by its shop mechanics, to essential workers who need transportation. The School District of Philadelphia has announced some changes to the 2019-2020 academic calendar to reflect the new date for the primary election, which was moved from April 28th to June 2nd due to the COVID-19 health emergency. Students will now be expected to participate in remote learning activities on Tuesday, April 28. On Tuesday, June 2, District schools will be closed, and remote learning activities will not be required.

The District has also announced a change to its grab-and-go meal distribution program. Beginning Thursday, April 23, the distribution of student meals will be held once a week, instead of twice a week. Every Thursday, the District will provide students with 5 breakfast and 5 lunch meals as well as a half-gallon of milk. The one-day-per-week schedule is a proactive measure the District is taking to minimize social interactions and help flatten the coronavirus curve. Pennsylvania residents entering a grocery store or any business in the state will have to wear a mask or a facial covering, according to a new state order. The requirement goes into effect on Sunday at 8 p.m. and is applied to both customers and staff.

Businesses have been ordered to refuse entry to anyone not wearing a facial covering. If the business sells food, medicine or medical supplies, they must provide “alternative methods of pick-up or delivery,” according to the order.

Businesses are required to provide masks for employees or approve masks they bring themselves.  Continue Reading
