Busy day at Clark Park: Petanque Tournament, Tune Up Philly, Farmers’ Market and some loopy chairs

October 5, 2013

Looped In, three social seating structures, popped up in Clark Park’s northern section earlier this week and will stay for a few weeks.

Clark Park was buzzing today, with several events taking place at the same time. Philly’s first Pétanque tournament was held in the circle of the northern section of the park. The tournament participants were trying to concentrate on their shots while the sounds from a kids’ concert, organized by the acclaimed Tune Up Philly afterschool program, and from Clark Park’s Farmers’ Market filled the air. The pétanque players also tried to avoid hitting new seating structures, called Looped In, which were installed in the circle a couple of days ago. Check out more photos below.

Stand in line at your local pharmacy and you’ll see the message loud and clear: your beauty is only worth the skin you’re in. It’s a message displayed between the lines of bright and bold typography—insistent typeface meant to catch your attention.

The messages we receive about how beauty’s defined—and what defines it—are a daily part of our lives. The way we regard ourselves is evidence of that.

But for West Philly photographer Jacques-Jean “JJ” Tiziou, there’s another epistle that should be shared—one that, if held with the same earnestness as it envisages, could dismantle superficial beauty standards.

That message? “Everyone is photogenic.”  Continue Reading

Oliver the dog flushes out a groundhog

August 10, 2013

A few months ago we wrote about a wild turkey roaming around West Philly streets, which caused a massive response from our readers and the story even got picked up by citywide media. The West Philly turkey became famous and started its own Twitter account.

While sightings of wild critters around here are not that rare, with periodic accounts of raccoons or opossums in folks’ backyards or near garbage containers, we haven’t heard a lot of stories about groundhogs in the hood. A neighbor, Bill, who lives near 49th and Springfield, spotted this cute fella earlier today after his dog, Oliver, chased it up on the fence in his backyard. Bill’s daughter Margie snapped the photo below. Bill, thanks again to Oliver, was one of the first neighbors who spotted the West Philly turkey.

Renovation of “Paradise City” is underway

April 19, 2013

In late 2011, we reported the West Philly-based real estate developers, the Orens Brothers, plan to revitalize the infamous Croydon Building into a seemingly-affordable 127-unit apartment complex. Work on the extensive project is now underway.

The air surrounding the looming 25,875 square-foot structure on 49th Street between Locust and Spruce Streets was heavy with raucous construction clatter when we visited the location Thursday afternoon. According to one worker on site, renovations of the Croydon began four months ago and should last two years, with the two wings hopefully completed by the fall. Representatives from the Orens Brothers could not be reached for comment.

The Orens Brothers bought the Croydon Building in 2011 for $1.75 million, with renovations budgeted at about $10 million. The once homogenous development, built in the early 20th century, became known by squatters as “Paradise City” after it was abandoned in the late 1990s. It was also the site of 2007 murder that resulted from a fight between two squatters. The building had been a focus of community concern for many years.
