“Mystical” sunset: Post-thunderstorm sky and Northern Lights

June 24, 2015

If you missed the incredibly colorful sunset last night check out the photos below. What we witnessed is rare mammatus clouds (sagging pouch-like structures, an indication that a severe thunderstorm has passed) lit up by the Northern Lights (Aurora borealis). The color of the sky changed from yellow to orange to red to purple within minutes.

“People throughout the city stopped to witness the incredible sunset post storm. Cars were pulled over. Photographers were lined up the Walnut Street Bridge. Pedestrians on camera phones were snapping the incredible evening hues. The best way to describe the sunset? Mystical.” – Photo and quote by reader Veronica Alvarez

By the way, there will be another chance to see the Northern Lights tonight. Here‘s some more information.

Severe thunderstorm passes through; huge tree down on Osage Ave

June 23, 2015

hugetreedownOsage

How is everyone doing after the summer’s first severe thunderstorm? Reports are coming in of power outages in some parts of the city and outside of it, but so far no such reports in our area. SEPTA suspended service on all regional rails because of downed wires and tree limbs. The Route 10 Trolley was temporarily suspended due to a downed tree that blocked the rails.

This huge tree fell on the 4600 block of Osage Avenue within five minutes after the storm started, according to West Philly Local reader reports. The tree narrowly missed houses and parked cars, and luckily no one was hurt. A reader named Lisa, who took the photo, says there is some damage to her garden.

May Fair

This youngster found a friend Saturday at the Spruce Hill Community Association‘s May Fair in Clark Park. The petting zoo, which included a llama (maybe an alpaca), a large selection of goats and some peculiar poultry-like creatures, was a big hit.
