Morris Animal Refuge will be hosting a free vaccine clinic for owned Philadelphia pets on Saturday, January 21, from 11:00 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Philly Auto and Parole (52nd and Woodland), as part of their recently launched Philly Pets Program.

Vaccinations will be administered by trained veterinarians and veterinary technicians, and will include Rabies prevention as well as species-specific vaccinations for common diseases among household pets. Morris is supported by the Banfield Foundation® through their Community Care Grant and Philly Auto and Parole to host this clinic free of charge.

Dog owners will receive a DHPP vaccine, a Rabies vaccine, flea and tick prevention, and an optional microchip for their pet. DHPP vaccinations prevent potentially life-threatening diseases such as canine distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, and parainfluenza (which contributes to “kennel cough”). All of these conditions are highly contagious, and vaccinations support the health of both the pets receiving them and neighboring dogs who they might typically encounter in communal spaces like parks.

Cat owners receive the same benefits, except they’ll receive the cat-specific FVRCP vaccine rather than the dog-specific DHPP. FVRCP protects against feline viral rhinotracheitis (FHV-1), feline calicivirus (FCV), and feline panleukopenia (FPL). FHV-1 and FCV are both contagious conditions that contribute heavily to upper respiratory infections in cats, and both have the potential to cause lifelong complications. FPL is a disease that is particularly dangerous to kittens, and it’s often fatal in this age category.

Both the DHPP and FVRCP vaccines should be given in puppy- and kittenhood, and adult animals need boosters every 1 to 3 years to keep them safe and healthy.

Free vaccine clinics are also vital for preventing rabies in the population. If unvaccinated for rabies, owned pets can be infected if they are bitten by rabid wild animals. This is fatal for pets and increases the likelihood of infection in their owners.
