Jewelry Design Camp (Lavner Camps)

Description: At Jewelry Design Camp, campers create a bracelet, a pair of earrings, and a necklace each week! In a two-step process, campers will first design their piece and then create it using hands on methods and an awesome selection of materials. Campers learn jewelry-making techniques like macramé basics, needlework, beading, creating and wrapping loops, measuring, cutting, threading, flattening, and more! Campers are encouraged to focus on the aesthetic and functionality of their designs.

Acting Summer Weekend Camp

Description: Learn acting techniques and the production side of the art, create a short film, develop a strong monologue, have fun and make new friends. The 12-day program is taught by Theatre and Me, LLC founder, actor and director Marcus A. Siler. If you have a child who is 6 that is interested in attending, they would have to be interviewed for the spot (please inquire by email). All children will leave with a DVD of their short film for them to use in their reel, as well as an end of the program showcase. All short films will be submitted to the public access channel phillycam for a possibility to be aired on their channel.
Cost: $60/day. Spots are limited. If you pay for a spot by June 13th, you will receive a $60 discount. If you can not commit to the full 12 day summer program, there are partial spots available, please inquire by email.

Description: The Gwendolyn Bye Dance Center has served the Philadelphia community as a full service dance school for children and adults since 1986. In 2006, the Dance Center merged with and became a division of the Dancefusion non-profit organization. The Gwendolyn Bye Dance Center offers year-round training classes for children and adults and is dedicated to the education and preservation of dance as a performing art; teaching at the highest standards the many disciplines of dance to students who will make up our next generation of dancers, artists, patrons and public; using dance as a bridge to cross cultural, social and economic boundaries. Summer camp programs include the following activities: ballet, jazz, pointe, modern, hip-hop, singing, acting, crafts, and musical theater.

Our innovative summer music camps will inspire and excite your child as they learn guitar, drums, bass, or keyboard and make new friends by forming a band with their peers! Girls Rock Philly Camp

Description: For the first time in 2015, we’ll be running two sessions of rock camp. The first week will be for teens (13 to 18) and the second week will be for youth (9 to 12). Girls Rock Philly’s Summer Camp, is a program featuring instrument instruction, workshops, visiting artists, band practice, a showcase and a day in the studio recording their original songs. Campers have instrument instruction every day in groups of 3-5 organized by skill level and age. Campers also attend workshops on topics ranging from songwriting to improvisation to healthy relationships. At the end of the week, bands perform their original song at a showcase and then spend the next day recording their song in a professional studio.

Description: At Robotics Camp for ages 6-12, campers will use LEGO® MINDSTORMS® NXT 2.0 and LEGO® MINDSTORMS® EV3 to learn the fundamentals of building and programming a wide variety of robots. By learning important principles, campers will acquire the ability to create robots from their imagination, in addition to following instructions for specific robots provided by LEGO® and independent websites.
At Robotics Camp for ages 12-14 (August 10-14), campers will use Tetrix® from Pitsco. This Robotics Camp offers the next level for hands on learning in Robotics. Tetrix allows campers to build and program more complex robots using advanced features such as aircraft grade aluminum parts, powerful drive motors, wires, customizable remote controls, and engineering design.

Computer Coding with Java Camp (Lavner Camps)

Description: This computer programming camp gives campers a glimpse into Java™, the popular operating software used on over four billion devices worldwide! Campers learn about the logic, planning, and calculations that go into building Java™ programs, in addition to sharpening skills in planning and problem solving. While working on a project throughout the week, campers have the opportunity to express themselves creatively and develop a project, coding from the backend. By the end of the session, campers improve their skills in Java™ and gain a better understanding of computer languages as a whole and leave camp with a cool project! Learning Java™ gives our campers a leg up in the tech world and a better understanding of how many programs work from the backend. No prior experience is necessary, but a basic understanding of Algebra is recommended.

Introduction to Programming with Scratch Camp (Lavner Camps)

Description: At this awesome computer camp, campers gain great experience with computer science! Campers use Scratch, a program created by the MIT Media Lab, to create, program, and share projects. Campers code from the backend to create character actions and interactions, in addition to establishing entire interactive adventures and stories. Scratch uses a programming language that is in easy to understand English and created for its own platform. By moving and combining blocks of code, campers develop their own programs to create super cool animation projects. Campers can also make their animations interactive by including instructions, designing their character’s costumes, adding unique background images and sounds, programming their “sprites” (the objects that perform the actions in the project) to dance, sing, and talk, in addition to other endless possibilities. Campers enjoy customizing projects and using lots of creativity. For campers who want to get into computer programming, this is a great place to start!

Video Game Design (Lavner Camps)

Using the powerful program Fusion 2.5, campers learn how to create their own video games for use on computers, and create Apps compatible with iOS® devices (the Ipad® and iPhone®) and the Android™. No previous experience is necessary, however more complicated projects are offered to campers based upon their age and ability. Starting with a blank screen, campers begin with a single frame where they place objects, scenery, a scoreboard, and number of lives. They then use the events editor to program how objects behave in this environment. The games and Apps are then expanded to multiple frames and levels, resulting in a complete multi-level arcade and/or platform game/App.

Description: Stretch your imagination, improve your skills, and work individually or collaboratively (on our own private server) in the same virtual world! Our own servers allow campers to work together on the same projects, creating fun and dynamic group interaction! Using Minecraft as a learning tool, campers participate in one of the world’s most popular gaming platforms to create their own world. By using blocks and various resources, campers will literally “mine” and “craft” their own creations, with some project options including: a medieval village, landscape arenas, secret underground cities, pirate ships, high rise buildings, towers, bridges, castles, caves, roller coasters and entire amusement parks. Campers may also construct famous buildings and structures like the Space Needle, Petronas Towers, The White House, Taj Mahal, Buckingham Palace, The Pantheon and/or structures of their own choosing.

Discovery Camp

Description: Our day camps allow campers to spend each week exploring the museum, engaging in hands-on science activities, participating in explosive live science shows, and making new friends—all while learning about the lively world of science! Each summer day camp session’s theme is independent of the other weekly themes. Campers do not need to attend weekly sessions consecutively; however it is highly recommended that campers attend a full weekly session to get the best camp experience and to engage in all camp activities.

Description: This year’s camp theme: “STEMbiosis: Foundation of our Future.” The EMBHSSC is a two-week, academic, residential camp that emphasizes increasing students’ mathematics and science knowledge and skills while introducing them to college life and stimulating their interest in science and engineering as a potential career path. The ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp (EMBHSSC) is organized to provide activities, experiments, projects, and field experiences for students entering 6th, 7th, or 8th grade in the Fall of 2013. The camp promotes science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education and supports historically underserved and underrepresented students with limited opportunities.

Campers also engage in match play, which is essential to putting lessons learned into practice, and learning from situations that arise when the game is played. Campers will also experience matches with and without a chess clock, to expose them to numerous scenarios (timed and untimed) that will assist in their development as players. On Fridays, campers participate in an “in-camp” chess tournament with a round robin format. This gives campers the opportunity to participate in competition while in a friendly and supportive environment.

CIT Leadership Program (Lavner Camps)

Description: The Counselor-in-Training (CIT) Leadership Program is for motivated teenagers who want to learn and develop new skills while working with children in a camp setting. CITs receive an orientation-training prior to camp and become certified in CPR/First Aid. During the summer, CITs work under the close supervision of our instructors and camp directors, and an evaluation is provided each week (for learning & improvement purposes.) This program helps to prepare our CITs for future work experience and will also bolster their résumés. It also gives our CITs a chance to have a fun and productive summer where they can work in specialty camps of their choice!
To become part of our CIT Leadership Program, an applicant must “register” on lavnercamps.com and complete an application process. The CIT Leadership Program is offered for every camp that is offered at the University of Pennsylvania this summer. A CIT can choose to work from four to eleven weeks at camp, but a four-week commitment (full week) is the minimum requirement.

Activities at camp include: swimming, boating, hiking, team-building, campfires, archery, and creative arts such as singing, dancing, drawing, painting, drumming, acting, sewing, and wood-working. Description: This year, campers will help solve the mystery about what is happening to great apes globally. Become Great Ape Heroes and join with Zoo experts to take action and help save these amazing animals. Through each week-long adventure, campers will have exclusive animal encounters, science investigations, action-based projects, behind the scenes tours and of course, memories to last a lifetime.
Cost: $330 (members), $350 (non-members) per week.

Youth Summer Cooking Camp
The Restaurant School at Walnut Hill College, 4207 Walnut Street
July 6 – 24, 2015. Weekly sessions.
Hours: 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Camper ages: 7 – 14
Cost: All-day full week – $525; All-day two weeks or more – $450 per camper per week. Tuition includes one chef jacket, hat and apron.

YMCA West Philadelphia Branch Day Camp

June 15 – August 28, 2015. Weekly sessions.
Hours: 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Extended care is available.
Camper ages: 4 – 14.
Description: Summer Day Camp programs include arts & crafts, sports, games, nature, adventure, performing arts, swimming, field trips, special events, story-telling, camp songs and many other activities. All activities are centered on a weekly theme.
Cost: Full Privilege Members: $170-$185/week; Program Members: $180-$195/week.
Registration closes two weeks before each camp week begins. Online registration closes on June 1, 2015. All campers must have a current Y membership.

ZoomDance Summer Camp

Hours: Full days: 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Early and Late Care options from 8 a.m. -4 p.m.
Camper ages: 3 – 8
Description: With lots of different movement classes, field trips, swimming, art projects, dancing, and performing there’s plenty of space for all kids to expend energy, express themselves, and find something new they love. Program may vary week-to-week, but specialty classes can include Hip Hop, Music, Yoga, Ballet, and Tap Dance. Each week will also feature ZoomDance performance workshops centered around one of our favorite stories. Pick your schedule: You can choose which weeks to attend, which days of the week you’ll join, and half or whole days.
